The David Samuel Orr Fund for the Earth Benefit Concert
Juno Award-winning musician, Ray Bonneville, is lending his unique, driving, blues-inflected showmanship to the Environmental Justice cause! On November 18, 2017, the singer-songwriter will be performing a benefit concert at the Geery Theatre in Sacramento.
Local musician Richie Lawrence, who performs with Bonneville around the world, will join in. Lawrences own band, The Yolos, is a Sacramento favorite and has gained international notice with its album Rue Sanxay.
The show will open with a brief presentation from long-time activist and environmental organizer, Marla Painter.
All proceeds from the concert will go to the Sacramento-based David Samuel Orr Fund for the Earth (DSOFFTE), a family-run giving fund that supports grass-roots Environmental Justice action by Indigenous organizations around the Southwest. Tickets are tax-deductible.
DSOFFTE was founded in 1998 to honor the memory and spirit of David Samuel Orr by supporting the ongoing efforts of groups he worked with during his lifetime. Davids own activism included helping the Western Shoshone in Nevada with disputes over tribal lands and nuclear waste, mining, and military training. He later joined Hopi and Navajo elders in resisting forced relocation of sheepherders near Big Mountain to open more tribal land to mining.
Next year will mark the Funds twentieth year, with over $300,000 granted to groups focused on changing the reservations long-term status as resource colonies for coal-fired energy. Issues include the health consequences, toxic slagheaps, and groundwater contamination left behind by coal and uranium mining; the depletion of sacred aquifers to transport coal slurry; nuclear waste disposal and greenhouse gas emissions.
More recently, DSOFFTE grants have also gone to groups pressing for, and installing, solar and other renewable energy sources with the aim of transitioning their reservations to green, tribe-owned energy economies. Other groups supported by the Fund are working towards food security by reviving traditional, dry-climate sustainable agriculture. For more information about our grantees, go to www.dsoffte.org.
