A Resister's Handbook & PHD (Po H# on Dope) to Ph.D.: How Education Saved My Life
IF ONLINE TICKET SALES HAVE ENDED, TICKETS WILL STILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR ONE HOUR BEFORE SHOWTIME.

One night, two powerful storytellers.

Giant Steps* presents Javier Morillos A Resisters Handbook and Dr. Elaine Richardsons PHD (Po H# on Dope) to Ph.D, two deeply personal hour long solo shows back to back.

A Resisters Handbook (for holding on to optimism in shitty times)

Javier Morillo used to tell organizers, "ours is a vocation of optimists." The hard realities of social justice work, as well as the political atmosphere of the country, have at times challenged that premise.  In A Resisters Handbook, he charts the path he followed from being a restless academic who moved to Minnesota to teach at Carleton College to becoming the leader of a union of janitors and service workers. Along the way, he finds new answers to the challenge: can we hold on to optimism in a really shitty world?

Javier Morillo is a labor union leader and activist, writer, storyteller, and political commentator. He is the president of Service Employee International Union (SEIU) Local 26. Javier created and co-hosts Wrong About Everything, a weekly podcast that is a fun, irreverent bipartisan look at Minnesota and national politics.

PHD (Po H# on Dope) to Ph.D.: How Education Saved My Life
Written by Mary Weems, Performed by Dr. E. Richardson

A theatrical adaptation of her memoir, Dr. E's one woman show takes audiences through crises of an urban Black girl ensnared in teenaged sex trafficking, addiction, and abuse to self-discovery and love.

Dr. Elaine Richardson grew up in a poverty stricken area of Cleveland, Ohio, to her Jamaican mother and American father. Being raped at 13, she became involved with what basically amounted to the same abusive boyfriend over and over again.  Ensnared in teenage sex-trafficking, later she became a young woman trapped in a cycle of abuse, drugs, alcohol, unwanted motherhood, and a dangerous lifestyle.  Desperate for a new life, she goes to college and becomes interested in language, literacy and identity studies.  Her story is about going from the streets to undergraduate and graduate experiences to earning a Ph.D., hence the title.
