SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21
12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

We have three events to celebrate Bee Girl coming to Boston!

(1) TALK
12:00 - 1:00 pm

Over the last six years the Bee Girl organization has grown from one person with a passionate vision, love for bees, and two bee hives towed to Oregon from Montana in a Uhall, to a thriving nonprofit organization with two staff members, three graduate student interns, seven directors, and a world-wide impact.  Sarah Red-Laird, founder and executive director, will take you on the journey of her story, driven by a deep reverence for our honey bees.  Shell also report on her latest education programs and research projects, collaborating with Washington State University, The Farm at Southern Oregon University, and the Oregon Department of Transportation. REGISTRATION REQUIRED

(2) BLACK JAR HONEY SHOW
1:00 - 2:00 pm, drop off entries and day-of registration
2:00 - 3:30 pm, voting

How a black jar honey show works: The jar is "blacked-out" with paint, paper, or tape (see below) so that the color of the honey is not actually visible. The judging is based purely on taste and generally occurs while blind-folded. The first place winner will win a complimentary HoneyDNA test from The Best Bees Company! REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Rules

  • Entrants must register here online or at the specified time on the day of the event.

  • All entries must be produced by the contestant within the last calendar year.

  • Only one entry per contestant.

  • Any type of jar can be used but must be "blacked-out" in some way (it doesn't have to actually be black).

  • Do not label your jar in any way. Instead, please write the following on a sheet of paper and affix (so it can be removed for voting) the sheet to your jar.

(3) HONEY BEE FLY IN
2:00 - 4:00 pm

Drop in anytime between 2:00 and 4:00 pm to learn about honey bees and participate in hands-on activities like honey tasting and candle making! No registration required!

Sarah Red-Laird, "Bee Girl", is the founder and Executive Director of the Bee Girl organization, a nonprofit with a mission to educate and inspire communities to conserve bees, their flowers, and our food. She is a graduate of the University of Montana's College of Forestry and Conservation with a degree in Resource Conservation, focused on community collaboration and environmental policy. Aside from running the Bee Girl organizations programs, Sarah is the Kids and Bees Director for the American Beekeeping Federation, is an active member of the Northwest Farmers Union, the Western Apicultural Societys President Elect, the Regional Representative for the Southern Oregon Beekeepers Association, and a brand ambeesador for Mountainsmith. When she is not tirelessly working with bees, beekeepers, kids, farmers, land managers, and policy makers, Sarah love to read historical fiction, ride her bike, hike in the hills, see new places and things, people watch, and snuggle any animal that she can catch.

This event is co-sponsored by the Boston Area Beekeepers Association, The Best Bees Company, Follow the Honey, and the Mass Audubon Boston Nature Center.
