La cruz y la espada / El rey de los gitanos
La cruz y la espada  (U.S., 1934)

A Franciscan monk in old California rescues his best friends fiancée from bandits, but then must battle his reawakened sexual desire.  La cruz y la espada highlights Californias history under Spanish colonialism while the casting of Mexican tenor José Mojica allowed Fox to capitalize
on his transnational star power.

35mm, b/w, 73 min.  Director: Frank Strayer.  Cast: José Mojica, Juan Torena, Anita Campillo, Lucio Villegas.

El rey de los gitanos  (U.S., 1933)

The King of the Gypsies rises too far above his station when he courts an aristocratic lady whose fiancé is extremely jealous.  José Mojicas gypsy king is pure Hollywood camp in a fairy-tale opera setting designed by Fox to compete with the emerging Mexican film industry.

DCP, b/w, 82 min.  Director: Frank Strayer.  Cast: José Mojica, Rosita Moreno, Julio Villarreal, Romualdo Tirado.
