Past, Present, Future: Can Tennis Change the World?
Past, Present, Future: Can Tennis Change the World?
A special event, conducted to by the Berkeley Tennis Club Foundation, to benefit Friends of Berkeley High Tennis, seeks to address that question on Sunday, October 8, 2017.

It begins with a screening at the Rialto Cinemas Elmwood (College and Ashby) of the new feature film, "Battle of the Sexes," an engaging tale focused on the infamous 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs starring Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone as King and renowned comedian Steve Carell as Riggs.

"Battle of the Sexes," which opens throughout the Bay Area on September 22, addresses a spectrum of issues that remain relevant -- gender rights, sexuality, sports and more.

An interesting local angle: King at the time of this match was living in the East Bay, and frequently played at the Berkeley Tennis Club, quite often with her doubles partner and equally committed activist, San Francisco native Rosie Casals. King was bestowed an honorary membership to the Berkeley Tennis Club in 2007.

Following the screening, attendees will head to the Berkeley Tennis Club for hors d'oeuvres and a panel discussion about such topics as the film, its meaning today and ways people of all ages can address these many issues. THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY SEEN THE FILM CAN SEE IT AGAIN OR JUST COME TO THE BERKELEY TENNIS CLUB.

The panel will be moderated by Joel Drucker, one of the worlds leading tennis historians, including more than a decade of work for Tennis Channel, the position of historian-at-large for the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the author of two books, "Jimmy Connors Saved My Life" and "Don't Bet on It."

Joel will be joined by two prominent experts on topics related to sports and gender:

Rita Liberti, a sports historian and professor at Cal State East Bay.  Her many articles include "Rebel with a Racket," a story on Rosie Casals, which is featured in an anthology Professor Liberati co-edited, "San Francisco Bay Area Sports: Golden Gate Athletics, Recreation and Community."

Shaun Chauduri, a gender rights activist, serving as treasurer on the Board of Directors for the U.S. National Committee for UN Women San Francisco Bay Area (SFBA). A graduate of Havard, Shaun studied gender studies and economics and also interned for the Women's Tennis Association.
