Apache Stronghold at UW Intellectual House
The fight to save sacred Oak Flat has been going on for more than a decade. Led by past Tribal Chairman Wendsler Nosie, Sr. and his granddaughter Naelyn Pike, Apache Stronghold stands in protection of Mother Earth and places held sacred since time immemorial. The U.S. government is currently in the process of giving a foreign mining corporation control of Oak Flat, despite the fact that legislation was introduced in Congress twice to approve the land giveaway, and twice that legislation failed. By sneaking a clause into a piece of must-past legislation, Congress succeeded in trading the sacred site and rare riparian desert ecosystem for a few parcels of worthless overgrazed scrub land. The Apache people and allies including the Sierra Club and thousands of individuals will not stand down. Learn the details of the story during a rare visit from the leadership of the effort to protect Oak Flat, and our Mother Earth.
