Fun With Fermentation
The Willamette Valley Sustainable Foods Alliance (WVSFA) is delighted to announce their annual Fun with Fermentation Festival will be held on Sunday, October 1st from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The organization chose to switch the event date from January to October in order to celebrate fermentation at its bestduring harvest season. The event will take place at the Downtown Lane Community College campus at 101 W 10th Ave. Eugene, Oregon.
Fun with Fermentation is an educational event focused on discovering the many ways fermentation is used to make foods that we eat every day. At its most basic level, fermentation is the process of balancing the pH of food to create an environment for healthy bacteria to grow and keep bad bacteria out. The good bacteria create an environment in which the food is broken down into a more digestible form for the body, and the balanced pH level preserves the food for times when fresh food is not as readily available. Fermented and preserved dishes are relatively inexpensive to make, and a fun and delicious way to eat healthy.
Fun with Fermentation offers workshops, live demonstrations and lots of sampling. Keynote speakers Kristen and Christopher Shockey, authors of Fiery Ferments, will present at 1pm. Demonstrations will include Kraut by Raychel Kolen of Mountain Rose Herbs, Fermented Meats by Johnathan Tepperman of the Eugene Meat Collective, as well as fermenting fruit and sourdough breads, and the nutritional benefits of eating fermented foods.
A variety of regional businesses will be attending the festival to offer samples of their fermented products and showcase supplies to make fermented products at home. WVSFA member businesses will be offering samples of locally produced beers, ciders, mead, kombucha, coffee, pickles, and kimchi, and displaying fermentation supplies. The organization will also be selling $1 commemorative glasses in the beer garden. WVSFA is excited about the number of local companies attending; including Oregon Brineworks, Activation Foods, Falling Sky Fermentation, Mountain Rose Herbs, GloryBee, Wildcraft Cider Works, Eugene Meat Collective, Down to Earth, Nectar Creek, and Eva Herbucha.
In addition to vendors sampling fermented products, there will be farm vendors selling freshly harvested food that is ideal for fermenting. Other event firsts include delicious prepared dishes showcasing fermented foods from Falling Sky catering, available for sale inside the event, and refreshment sales from the Coalesce Juicery food truckat the event entrance. A portion of the proceeds from this years event will support Willamette Farm and Food Coalitions Double Up Food Bucks program, that assists SNAP shoppers in procuring more fresh produce at farmers markets. Admission is a suggested donation of $10 (or $5 if you bring two cans of food for FOOD For Lane County). Kids 12 and under can attend for free and enjoy special activities in the Kid Zone.
