Welcome Fall with an exciting evening of Barcelona flamenco party songs and dances on October 12th, 2017 at O'Connors Portland with the newly formed group Ali-Olé!
Get ready to shout Olé! with Barcelona born flamenco dancer Verónica Medina Cano, and Barcelona singer Mercedes Estevez who join with their friends Tarik & Julia Banzi on strumming flamenco guitars, hand clapping (palmas) and drums. Veronica recently relocated to Portland, OR and her energy and passion for flamenco is contagious. The voice of Mercedes Estevez (singer) will transport you to Spain without jetlag! Biography:
Verónica Medina Cano (Dancer and choreographer) was born in Barcelona, Spain and holds a degree in Spanish Dance and Flamenco from the Conservatory of Barcelona. She has trained at the Escuela Amor de Dios school with teachers like María Magdalena, Adrián Galia, Cristóbal Reyes, Tomás de Madrid, Manuel Liñán, Carmen La Talegona, la Truco, Rafaela Carrasco, Antonio Canales, Merche Esmeralda, Belén Fernández, David Paniagua, Rafael Amargo o Javier Latorre among others. She began her professional performance career in 2004 with the show Somorrostro under the direction of Javier Latorre. At the end of 2004 she joined Manolo Nuñez Ballet on a tour through northern Italy with the show Contrastes. In 2005 she moved to Madrid to continue her studies and joined the company Antonio Márquez Company, where she danced in El Sombrero de Tres Picos y El Bolero de Ravel. In 2006 she settled in Barcelona and joined the Gran Palace Ballet Hall and shows in Lloret under the direction of Manolo Nuñez. She danced at the Gran Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona during 2006-2007 season in the operas Manon Lescaut, Boulevard Solitude and Manon. In mid-2007 she joined the Palacio del Flamenco flamenco show in Barcelona with the Ballet Manolo Nuñez. In 2012 she began teaching at the Centro Cultural Estrellas Altas in addition to weekly different cultural events in Barcelona with the rumba music group Sabor de Gracia. She settled in Amsterdam in 2013 where she joined the faculty of the flamenco dance school Flamencoamsterdam and where she continued her artistic career developing performances, courses and collaborations around the Netherlands. In 2016 she moved to the US where she lives and where she continues her career. Her performance is characterized by injecting traditional moves with bold theatrical flair, this Spanish dancer brings flamenco thrillingly up to date.
Mercedes Estevez Azaustre (Singer) is from Barcelona, Spain. She began singing as a child, inspired by family members from Jaen, Andalucia. In Barcelona, Mercedes performed with the flamenco group Los Hermanos Molina. She enjoys singing, songwriting and even dancing as she rouses the audience with her valor and zest!
Julia Banzi (Flamenco guitar, viola, Ph.D. Ethnomusicology) is one of a very few female flamenco guitarists worldwide and a pioneer in researching womens Andalusian music. Her work reflects her over twenty years of living, studying and performing in North Africa and Spain , studying flamenco with some of Spains finest guitarists such as Manolo Sanlucar and Isidro Munoz. Julia holds a Doctorate degree in Ethnomusicology from the University of California, Santa Barbara and is a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar who teaches at Reed College and Lewis & Clark College.
Tarik Banzi (Oud, percussion, composer) a superbly gifted player (All Music Guide) is from one of the founding families of Tetouan, Morocco and traces his roots back to medieval Al Andalus, Spain. A preserver and innovator of Andalusian music, Tarik has collaborated with Flamenco, jazz and contemporary masters such as Paco de Lucia, Manolo Sanlucar and Enrique Morente. He introduced the darbuka and udu drums to modern flamenco music; they are now cornerstones of the movement.
