Compelling performances require heartfelt, committed intention and a well-coordinated instrument through which expression can flow. Join Gloria Parker and Claudia Friedlander in exploring how to bring your audition arias vividly to life, both from the inside out and outside in.
GLORIA PARKER
Mezzo-soprano, mentor and artist manager Gloria Parker received a Bachelor of Music from Oklahoma City University, a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Manhattan School of Music, and a Certificate of Arts Administration from New York University; she is also a Riva-certified focus group moderator and marketing consultant.
Ms Parker performed leading operatic roles throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, South America and Asia. Her career has also included leading roles on Broadway, Off-Broadway, International Festivals and on national and global tours. Artistic Director of Opera Avanti for seven seasons, she was most recently Producing Director for Ardea Arts/Family Opera Initiative in NYC.
Founder and Executive Director of Insignia Artists Management, Ms Parker previously managed the classical music careers of over 75 American and Canadian artists for a London-based arts management firm in New York City, many of whom appeared at the worlds most distinguished performing arts institutions. Her commitment to the promotion of exceptional artistry led her to create Insignia in order to provide support, guidance and development for both emerging and established artists, furthering her mission is to promote brilliant performers and providing a platform from which their diverse talents may impact music presentation worldwide.
CLAUDIA FRIEDLANDER
Claudia Friedlander is a voice teacher and fitness expert based in New York City. In her first few years of teaching, frustration with her inability to address the mechanical dysfunction some of her students possessed in a methodical and rigorous way motivated her to study kinesiology. After receiving her certification as a personal trainer from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, she became inspired to apply the concept of sport-specific training to the professional voice.
Dr. Friedlander has presented workshops on vocal fitness for The Voice Foundation and the Performing Arts Medicine Association, and was an invited panel discussant on health and wellness for OPERA America. Her students have performed on Broadway, and at leading opera houses including The Santa Fe Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. She is the author of the monthly column Musings on Mechanics for Classical Singer Magazine as well as a widely read and cited blog on vocal technique and fitness, The Liberated Voice. In 2008, she joined the faculty of the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, where her most recent project was the development, in collaboration with Joyce DiDonato, of The Singers Audition Handbook, an interactive online career development guide for young singers.
Dr. Friedlander earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at Bennington College,Masters degrees in Voice and Clarinet at Peabody Conservatory, and a Doctor of Music in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy at McGill University.
