"Why Don't They Come?"
Have you noticed the rapid change of demographics in your region/county? Have you wondered about effectively working with non-traditional audiences? Are you aware of the population trends in Washington? and who Extension and other organizations will serve in the future? Are you prepared?

The Latino/a community has rapidly grown in Washington.  Many Latinos have experience in home gardening and many even work in agriculture industry.  Extension, including Master Gardeners and others are increasingly challenged to reach out to this audience.  Where do we start and what approaches do we use?  Reaching out to Latinos/as will be more effective if community educators and volunteers understand and empathize with their needs, characteristics, and cultural and socio-economic factors. The training Why don't they come? Strategies to increase Latino/a participation in outreach program offers tools and skills to work more effectively with Latino families.

At the end of the training you will:

Knowledge
Be more aware of your how the master gardener program stands on inclusion of Latinos in policies, plans and activities
Better understand the Latino/a community's cultural values and beliefs and its demographic makeup
Gain or reinforce best practices and effective methods in working with Latinos/as
Identify strategies and practices to work with Latinos as master gardener volunteers in their communities

Actions
Plan an activity oriented towards the Latino/a community
Start or expand partnerships to serve Latino/a families and other underserved communities
Design and implement culturally appropriate and effective programs with/for Latinos/as

Facilitator: José García-Pabón (WSU, Latino/a Studies Program)
