Workshop with Paul Kivel
Please join us for a workshop with author Paul Kivel, who will be presenting material from his book Uprooting Racism: How White People Can Work for Social Justice, which is now in its fourth edition.

About the book:
In 2016, the person elected president of the United States has openly called for segregation and deportation based on race and religion. Meanwhile, Segregation and inequalities in education, housing, health care and the job market continue to be the norm while increased insecurity and fear have led to an epidemic of violence and harassment of people of color. Yet recent polls have shown that only 31 percent of white people in the US believe that racism is a major societal problem. At the same time, resistance is strong as highlighted by Indigenous struggles for land and sovereignty and the Movement for Black Lives.
Completely revised and updated, this 4th edition of Uprooting Racism offers a framework around neoliberalism and interpersonal, institutional, and cultural racism, along with stories of resistance and white solidarity. About the author:
Paul Kivels work grows out of four decades in community education, engaged parenthood, political writing, and practical activism all focused on one overriding question: How can we live and work together to nurture each individual and create a multicultural society based on love, caring, justice, and interdependence with all living things?
Kivel was a co-founder of the Oakland Mens Project and a leader in the anti-violence movement developing resources to work with men against patriarchy and violence. He is also part of the group that started SURJShowing Up for Racial Justice and a leader in the anti-racist movement developing resources for white people against white supremacy and inequality. He is the author of You Call This a Democracy?
