Forgotten Chicago South Shore Walking Tour
Join us on Sunday, September 17, 2017 for an all-new walking tour of the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago. Notable as one of the few lakefront communities in Chicago where Lake Shore Drive does not block access to the lake, South Shore developed rapidly in the 1910s and 20s into a very dense neighborhood of high rises, large apartment buildings and other grandiose structures. Unique among Chicago neighborhoods, it has an electric Metra line running right down the middle of its major shopping district.

Famous for the South Shore Country Club (1906), the historic site of Barack & Michelle Obamas 1992 wedding reception, South Shore is today a diverse community with a complicated history. Once featuring a large Jewish population, the area experienced rapid racial change in the 1960s, becoming nearly 100 percent black by 1980. Predatory real estate agents and other actors helped cause this rapid change.

Our walking tour will feature both the commercial and residential districts of South Shore, where many remnants from earlier eras remain. We will also discuss the churches, former synagogues and other institutions that reflect different eras of the community, as well as the change that has occurred over the years. Historic and unique residential architecture by noted Chicago architects will be featured. And of course, other oddities and overlooked remnants of the built environment, such as the former Manor Garage, and social history of the area will be discussed in our tour of this historic and dynamic community.

Tour Details:

When? Sunday September 17 at Noon. Rain or shine.

Where? The tour will meet and begin on the northwest (NW) corner of 71st and Jeffery, at the Bryn Mawr Metra Electric station. It will conclude at 79th and Exchange near the 79th/Cheltenham Metra Electric Station. If you are arriving via Metra, train 8309 leaves Millennium Station at 11 AM and arrives at Bryn Mawr at 11:24 AM. You can also take the #J14 Jeffery Jump express bus from the Loop to 71st and Jeffery. Returning to the Loop, your best bet is to grab the #6 Jackson Park Express which begins about a block east of where the tour ends, as the northbound train from 79th/Cheltenham will not arrive until 3:56 PM.

How Long? The tour will consist of about 3 1/2 miles of walking and will last approximately 2 1/2 hours.

How much? $20. Advance purchase is required. No walk-ups. All sales are final. No refunds or exchanges. If severe weather cancels the tour, credit will be issued for use on a tour of equal value.
