Humanities Washington's Think & Drink: The Divided Library
The Magic Lantern Theatre
Spokane , WA
Share this event:

Though seldom mentioned as a factor in our increasingly divided country, the stories we tell about one another matter. Stories are the glue that hold a culture together---but they can also act as a wedge to drive cultures apart.

Is the solution to our polarized moment in the stories we hear and tell about each other? As participants in a democracy, do we have a responsibility to bridge our cultural divides through the literature and media we consume, or does that place an undue burden on what should be a pleasurable and personal activity?

The Divided Library invites us to consider the ways literature and media have the potential to break down walls between cultures and get us closer to our common humanity.

Gonzaga University professor Jessica Maucione, Gonzaga professor and author Shann Ray, and University of Washington senior lecturer Anu Taranath explore the power of story by discussing two books that encouraged them to re-examine their biases and see the world from a different point of view. Join us for an engaging conversation as we discuss the books and media that give us pause or a different perspective on a culture, religion, or social class to which we do not belong. How might our society shift if we broadened the stories we hear and tell?
