Thurgood Marshall: a life in the law, a legacy of jurisprudence
The Davis Levin First Amendment Conference and the ACLU of Hawaii are proud to offer this rare chance to hear more about the person that Thurgood Marshall was, and the extraordinary importance of his early courtroom battles on his legacy of civil rights jurisprudence.
Thurgood Marshall looms large in history as a legal titan in Brown v. Board of Education, which desegregated U.S. public schools, and as the first Aftrican-American appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. What experiences shaped his character and world view? How does his legacy affect the law, even today? Visiting speakers John Marshall and Michael Koskoff join Mark Davis to discuss.
John Marshall is the son of Thurgood Marshall, and a sought-after speaker on criminal justice, civil rights, and his fathers legacy. Breaking barriers of his own, he served as the first African-American Director of the United States Marshals Service.
Michael Koskoff is an author, classically trained actor and a nationally reknowned litigator. He wrote the screenplay to the major motion picture Marshall, which chronicles an early case of Marshalls - as a young lawyer for the NAACP - whose themes of racism, class privilege and sensationalized media continue to resonate nationwide today.
