Tone Poem House Concert
Lavon Hardison, voice, kazoo Ev Stern, bass Larry Mahlis, drums, tabla, little instruments Jonas Myers, piano
LaVon Hardison sings jazz standards, originals, and her own eclectic and compelling arrangements of popular songs. Equally at home at jazz clubs, corporate events, private parties, and sacred settings, LaVon uses her background in musical theater, opera, and jazz as a foundation for her accessible, joyful, and engaging musical explorations.
Born in Boston, LaVon Hardisons earliest musical roots go back to her childhood Baptist church. She also had formal discipline training in classical/opera with the Boston Lyric Opera, along with dramatic and musical theater, video work, TV, film, and voice-overs. Now based in Olympia, Washington, LaVon works with various musical collaborators with whom she can have deep and often funny musical conversations. She also collaborates with swing guitarist Vince Brown as the duo Red and Ruby.
LaVon was a featured performer at the 2009 Festival of World Sacred Music in New Delhi, India.
In 2016, LaVon won the Seattle-Kobe Sister City Jazz Vocalist Audition at Dimitrious Jazz Alley, claiming the prize of a jazz-soaked journey to Japan, performing in Kobe, Osaka, and Tokyo. LaVon has also hosted a weekly radio show, The Jazz Experience on KAOS-FM.
Larry "Leftheri" Mahlis is a drummer/percussionist known for combining old and new world rhythms. Among his influences are his love for Jazz and the rhythms of his family's native Greece, with its paths outward to the Middle East, India, and Asia. Larry draws on these influences in the musical quest for communication, collaboration, and joy. His body of work ranges from concert collaborations with Indian classical musicians to contemporary film and video-game scores.
Ev Stern has been bassed in Seattle since 1989 and is most famous for running nearly 100 Jazz Workshops with upwards of 500 participants over nearly a quarter century. When he's not earning his nickname Steamer Stern, hopping mad, yelling about swing things, the Tradition, and burning Realbooks, Ev is a freelance double-bassist, bandleader, music therapist, Shakespeare Teacher, and he is studying to be a Feldenkrais practitioner. He also runs the Maple Leaf Music Space, which the kids call Make Believe Music Space, which is open and available for concerts, workshops, private lessons, and parties.
Jonas Myers is a musician and a writer based in Seattle, Washington. He grew up playing music all over town and with the prestigious Garfield High School jazz band. He plays keys, bass, guitar, and he sings; he also composes music. He studied jazz piano with Darrius Willrich and Randy Halberstadt; he studied jazz bass with Evan Flory-Barnes. After graduating from Garfield, Jonas moved to Walla Walla, Washington, to attend Whitman College. There, he earned his degree in English, with a focus on creative fiction. His senior thesis was Part One of a novel; he continues to work on this novel. Jonas has provided editorial services to several published authors, of both prose and poetry.
Since returning to Seattle, Jonas has been studying piano with Dawn Clement. He plays solo, and with Queenside Castle, The Walking Hat Trio, and The Seattle Jazz Quartet, with whom you can catch him every Wednesday night at Paragon. In his spare time, Jonas loves to hike, bike, fish, bake bread, watch movies, and, of course, play music.
