Don Arrington: "On The Block"

ON THE BLOCK is a musical revue that goes inside the minds of the wild and wacky denizens of one block in the East Village. Some of these characters are from a time in the mid nineties when gentrification was just past the crawling stages and learning to take its first steps and some are as current as the Seven Eleven on The Bowery.

During the course of seventy minutes we meet: The Dogs, offering their opinion that "the block is going to the humans"; The Last Little Girl on the Block, with the homicidal Barbie Doll; The Junkie who bemoans that "it's tough to be a junkie: you've gotta give up a lot;" The Block Vigilante who maintains in "Right is Right and Wrong is Wrong" that "There's only one way to look at things and we will be the champs to put the fairies in the camps; in "Solo in the City" two lonely people, wonder if they should leave the safety of their solitary existences to take another shot at a relationship; The Homeless, "Living in a Cardboard Box;" and many others.

The eclectic musical styles of ON THE BLOCK include English music hall patter songs, military marches, blues, rock and pop, sometimes all at the same time, all with a liberal dash of Spike Jones insanity.

ON THE BLOCK is written by Don Arrington; performed by the composer and Camille Tibaldeo, with musical accompaniment by Peter Dizozza and direction by Barbara Maier Gustern.

Don Arrington: (Male Characters) has been a fixture of Downtown theater since the seventies, working as an actor and singer with Will Leach and John Braswell's ETC Company of LaMaMa and with John Vaccaro in the Playhouse of the Ridiculous at La MaMa and at Theater for the New City.  He has performed at numerous regional theatres and at The Delacorte Theater with The New York Shakespeare Festival and has appeared in the works of William M. Hoffman, Rosalyn Drexler, Liz Swados and Ken Bernard, among others. As a composer and playwright he has written scores of tunes and incidental music for Downtown theater, including Vaccaro's "Juba".  He is known, in addition to other works, for his musical, "Allegros!," musical revues "If This Ain't It!," "On the Block," dance theater piece, "Without Apparent Motive," and, with librettist Stephan Holt, the one woman opera, "I Love My Voice".  He is currently preparing for a 2018 production of his new full length play with music, "Cemetery Beach". He is very grateful for the collaboration of Camille and Peter and the generous direction of the piece by Barbara Maier Gustern.

Camille Tibaldeo (Female Character) performed in New York and on U.S. and European tours as a member of the ETC Company of La Mama. She has appeared in regional theater and at NYC cabaret venues, and with Don Arrington in a number of his original musical theater pieces, among them a previous incarnation of On the Block at Theater for the New City.

Peter Dizozza: (Musical Accompaniment) works in the Law Office of Jerald Werlin with prior employment at the Office of the New York City Comptroller and a limited practice through Cinema VII Artist Services.  He is a Cinema VII artist.  Recent credits include the score for Out of the Forest, a musical about leaving and returning to Forest Hills, Queens, and Float, based on his album, The Ocean Floaters, produced at Theater for the New City in the East Village and revised with an international cast for performance during the 2015 Ubud Writers and Readers Festival in Bali, Indonesia.  His new musical, Bulb, is indeed about plant husbandry.  The New Yorker described his songs as whimsical and politically charged.  He is a former Chair of the City Bars Entertainment Committee and a proud member of The Lambs®. His new musical, Bulb, is a Burlesque about plant husbandry and his Immigration Interview play, Associative
Behavior, is scheduled for a timely revival at Dixon Place, August 29.

Barbara Maier Gustern is a voice teacher, director, producer and performer.  She teaches many of the people who have performed at Pangea as well as directed their shows.  Her performing career spans performances with the New York City Opera to night clubs in Egypt and Hong Kong and musical theater across the country.  She has taught opera singers to rock and roll's Debbie Harry to the international sensation Diamonda Galas.  "Thanks to Don and Camille for allowing me to indulge my new passion - directing."

Downtown's intimate supper-club Pangea is the ultimate in alt, playing home to some of the best in alt cabaret. The New York Times recently called it a bohemian oasis not unlike the fabled Max's Kansas City from days gone by."
