Deepening our Herbal Connections

August 12  and 13, 2017. Mt. Shasta area

8/12 Saturday - Listening to Plants

Many plant ID hikes are very scientifically-oriented, focusing on the botanical nomenclature, taxonomy, etc. In this workshop we will include some of that information, but the purpose of this time is to deepen our relationship to plants and begin to learn what indigenous people all over the world have known for thousands of years - plants have an inherent intelligence about themselves, their powers, and the world around them that they will share with anyone who sincerely desires to understand. All that is required is an intention to learn and a willingness to allow new ways of communication to penetrate our belief systems. The language of plants is telepathic, and is spoken to us in very personal ways. If we can learn how to understand their language, it can open up vast new worlds. When the us/them wall disappears, we naturally become more connected to the earth and the environment in which we live. We re-member ourselves into the society of plant families and plant communities that surround us.

In this 1/2 day workshop we will hike to a quiet spot where we can immerse ourselves in the plant world through a guided meditation. We will be working with a specific plant as a group, sitting still in silent meditation for a period of time, then opening up to a more contemplative time of personal communication through journaling and drawing. Since each person receives information from the plants in a very unique way, we will follow this period of contemplation with a sharing time to help us get a broader perspective about the plants teachings and particular powers.

There will be a short lunch break before we make our way back to the trailhead. From this deeper place of connectedness we will be meeting other plants along the way, especially those that are known for their herbal uses, and sharing our knowledge about them. All who have knowledge and/or experience of these plants are invited to share your wisdom at this time."

What to bring: water, a bag lunch, hat, sunscreen, a journal, writing utensil and/or simple art supplies, and whatever you need to bring for a seated meditation

8/13 Sunday  Creating a Home Medicine Chest

Learn the basics of how to make botanical products for your medicine chest as well as for your kitchen pantry. Once you learn the foundations, and a few key methods of herbal medicine making, its easy to apply that knowledge to create a multitude of
beautiful products for medicinal, cosmetic, and culinary uses. In this fun hands-on workshop we will be working with local herbs to make some beautiful products - an infused herbal oil, a medicinal salve, and a simple tincture. Throughout the day we will be covering which local plants are best to use for particular health issues, such as for lung support or cold care and discussing how to identify, harvest, and process some of the most common local plants, ethical wildcrafting, how and when to gather them, and the materials and methods needed for processing. While this information is focused on regional plants and ones that can be grown in the area, the foundations of the botanical-products making can also be translated and used for many herbs (and spices!) that can be obtained from others through commerce.

Crafting your own herbal products in this way is fun, addictive, and the gateway for many into deeper levels of earth stewardship, opening the doors to further understandings of our relationships with plants. Participants will go home with several samples of our creations from the day and a guarantee that they will never again be caught empty-handed when in need of a gift for someone!
