Justice Literacy Workshop with Free Write Arts & Literacy
Join AWP for the closing of "Vinny and David: Life and Incarceration of a Family" and a Justice Literacy Workshop led by Free Write Arts & Literacy. This 1.5-hour discussion will explore root causes of juvenile incarceration, including the School-To-Prison Pipeline and unconstitutional policing strategies.
This program is also presented in conjunction with Free Write's exhibition "Mitigating Evidence" which will be installed at AWP's 625 Studio Gallery from August 4 - 10. Mitigating evidence is evidence presented in legal proceedings, either to impact the courts decision or to alleviate harsh sentencing. The exhibition "Mitigating Evidence" is a strategy to interrupt the presumptions, stereotypes and fears about people in detention, jail, and prison. It is also a space in which incarcerated artists are reclaiming their artistry, authorship, and, therefore, their humanity. Presenting a curated selection of work made by participants of Free Write Arts and Literacy, the exhibition will offer community members the opportunity to view a wide range of art and writing, learn about issues of incarceration in Illinois, and respond to the sociopolitical climate that has given rise to the Prison Industrial Complex.
Food and drinks will be provided.
Ticket sales support Free Write Arts & Literacy programming in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center and ART WORKS Projects.
