A Celebration of Strings - Benefit Concert
Join us for a fun evening concert to benefit the Port Angeles Education Foundation's ongoing commitment to string education in our community.

Over a dozen talented musicians who have grown from the our music programs in Port Angeles will be featured.

In addition, we'll be recognizing and honoring those in our community who have tirelessly committed to string music education over the years.

Performances include;

Stephen Schermer, Double Bass

Stephen is bassist with the band Torch, Assistant Principal bassist with the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra, Principal bassist with the North Corner Chamber Orchestra and teaches at University of Puget Sound. Previously he has held positions with the Oregon Symphony and the Spokane Symphony. He is active in the recording industry, is sought after as a clinician and adjudicator, and as a chamber musician with organizations including the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival, the Olympic Music Festival, Simple Measures, Second City Chamber Series, Onyx Chamber Players, Carpe Diem String Quartet, Icicle Creek, and the Jacobsen Series at University of Puget Sound. Mr. Schermer received his BA with honors from Eastern Washington University, and his MM with honors from the New England Conservatory. He also spent two summers at the Tanglewood Music Center where he was the recipient of the Koussevitsky Fellowship.

James Garlick, Violin

Born in Port Angeles is equally at home as a chamber, orchestral, or solo musician. As the violinist of the Onyx Chamber Players, James recently recorded the piano trio works of David White, to be released on the Naxos label later this season. He has performed concerti from Tchaikovsky to Piazzolla with orchestras including the Northwest Sinfonietta, Everett Philharmonic, Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Cascade Symphony, Philharmonia Northwest, Lake Union Civic Orchestra, and Octava Chamber Orchestra.

James served as Concertmaster of Orchestra Prometheus Chicago under the direction of Matthias Pintscher, and has also led the Amarillo Symphony, Juilliard Orchestra, Northwest Sinfonietta, Cascade Symphony, Bellevue Philharmonic, and Oberlin Orchestra. While on tour in Cuba as concertmaster of the Northwest Sinfonietta, he led an ensemble of Cuban and American musicians in the Mendelssohn Octetthe first time musicians of both countries have shared a stage since 1959. James earned degrees in violin performance from Oberlin Conservatory and neuroscience from Oberlin College as well as a graduate degree from The Juilliard School. His teachers include Gregory Fulkerson, Sylvia Rosenberg, Stephen Clapp, and Joseph Lin.

Since moving to Minnesota in 2012, James has enjoyed performing regularly with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra and chamber musicians throughout the Twin Cities. James teaches violin at Macalester College and previously taught at St. Olaf College. He performs on a 1991 Samuel Zygmuntowicz violin and lives in Saint Paul with his wife Emily and dog Ellie.

Traci Winters, Cello

Traci has been playing the cello since the age of 10.  Winters joined the Port Angeles Symphony by the time she was in middle school. Not many years later, she played at New York City's Carnegie Hall with the Port Angeles High School Roughrider Orchestra, led by Ron Jones, in 1989.

After graduation, she attended Western Washington University on a merit scholarship.

With ensembles including Tangoheart, Sorrelle and the Bottom Line Duo, Winters has performed and taught music from Leavenworth to Cebreros, Spain.

Currently  besides her work at Port Angeles' Roosevelt and Jefferson elementary schools  Winters is principal cellist with the Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra.

Sabrina Scruggs, Violin

Sabrina Scruggs enjoys a vibrant musical career in Port Angeles, WA.  She maintains a full schedule; teaching strings in the Port Angeles School District, private lessons, and frequently performing with the Port Angeles Symphony.  Ms. Scruggs has also served on the board of directors for the Washington chapter of American Strings Teachers Association, and has served as a clinician and adjudicator at regional festivals and competitions.  Ms. Scruggs graduated with a degree in music education from Montana State University.  She has studied violin with Teresa Thomas Cirihal, Stephan Cepeda, Johan Jonsson, and Carrie Krause.  She is currently pursuing a Masters degree in music education from Central Washington University and National Board Certification in instrumental music.  Ms. Scruggs is looking forward to her sixth-year teaching in Port Angeles Schools and serving in her new position as Orchestra Director at Stevens Middle School.

Amanda Lukens, Violin

Amanda graduated from PAHS in 2008 and played as a first violinist in the PAHS Chamber Orchestra from 2004-2008.  After graduating from PAHS, she moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington. She obtained her Bachelors in Law, Societies, and Justice, and currently works as a paralegal representing injured workers. Since graduating, Amanda has continued her passion for music. She currently plays violin in the Rainier Symphony and studies with concertmaster Ilkka Talvi.
