Finding and Telling the Story (10 CE credits for Masters Level Professionals/10 clock hours for educators)

DESCRIPTION:
The power of personal narrative is in its potential to build and strengthen connections, drawing us to the storyteller to hear and in return share. We are unified by what we have in common and are attracted by our differences in many ways. We can share these strong stories by finding a compelling story structure that ensures that the audience has a doorway to enter a story and feel empathetic response. In this 10 hour workshop participants will learn core storytelling tools, engage in games and activities that explore narrative structure, and incorporate feedback to help Find and Tell the Story that wants to be told.
Over the two day workshop participants will explore in a creative and safe environment how to express ideas shaped in a spirit of camaraderie. This process involves listening to each other, contributing ideas, taking risks, facing vulnerability, and offering feedback that inspires momentum. We are building a circle transformed by the knowledge that we want to hear each others stories and wish each other well. In the workshop we will employ active, experiential learning, and allow plenty of time for discussion of these activities that may become a part of a storytelling toolbox. The safe container environment invites participants to, connect, and breathe life into the true story that is asking to be told.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1.Participants will be encouraged to discover and grow their own innate storytelling ability and distinguish different storytelling forms and their use in education and healing professions.
2.Participants will explore through games and written techniques how to find the core of the story and uplifting it with storytelling tools for greater audience immersion
3.Participants will receive instruction and examples on short-form story structure to start to craft their own experiences into a dynamic oral presentation
4.Participants will build self-confidence as a storyteller in a safe and supportive environment through peer practice
5.Participants will explore integrating peer feedback in a creative and encouraging small group discussion format
6.Participants will learn how to create opportunities for greater understanding and empathy in listeners
7.Participants will be able to identify and describe key elements involved in personal narrative and recognize these concepts across a variety of delivery formats
8.Participants will perform their story to their peers, offering a way to inspire connection and strengthening community through the art of shared story
9.Participants will unpack the performance experience with peers in a Q&A and will receive resources and information on furthering their storytelling experiences and opportunities.
PRESENTERS:
Bobbi Kidder, MA, RDT, BCT
Bobbi Kidder, MA, RDT, BCT, Director of the Drama Therapy specialization at AUS, has worked as a Drama Therapist for 32 years in settings that include prisons, schools, treatment
programs and refugee processing centers, directing intergenerational and group-centered projects, devised theatre, collaborative ventures, and production of timely, diversity-focused plays. International projects include work in Japan, Russia, Thailand, England, and France, and most recently, working to promote creative engagement with Tibetan exiles in Dharamsala, India. Bobbi places high value on improvisational skills, believing that having a clear understanding of the utility of imagination will promote a committed pursuit of its potential.
Kriya Kaping, MA
Kriya Kaping, BA, MA, is a community outreach multimedia and communications specialist with a background supporting universities, corporations, non-profit organizations, and individuals share stories that educate, uplift, and foster community involvement and personal connection. Ms. Kaping has worked with federal, state and local agencies to promote programs centered on civic awareness, cross-cultural competency, and scientific discovery. She is a trained facilitator with experience developing and leading public forums, training workshops, and seminars nationally and internationally. Kriya is a seasoned storyteller who has recently performed with Portland Storytellers Guild, Portland Story Theater, Backfence PDX, Speakeasy DC, and Living Stages.
