Strategic Questioning: A Workshop with Ericka Huggins
Ericka Huggins (activist, former political prisoner, leader in the Black Panther Party, educator & student) will teach participants how to use Strategic Questioning in their political organizing and individual relationships by guiding people through the practice and working in small groups.

Strategic Questioning is a technique that allows the questioner and questionee to engage in active dialogue that leads to solutions rather than prompting a series of limited or dead-end responses. The purpose of the questions is two-fold: It allows the questionee to consider options and make decisions without feeling pressured, and it lets both questioner and questionee take an active role in finding solutions.

We will address the question: How can we participate in the creation of change? Anyone can use strategic questions in their organizing work, or in their personal lives to liberate friends, coworkers, and political allies to create a path for change. When we open ourselves to another point of view, our own ideas will have to shift to take into account new information, new possibilities, and new strategies for resolving problems.

The method was developed by Ronald T. Hyman and later refined by Fran Peavey. Peavey defines Strategic Questioning as follows:

"Strategic Questioning is a way of talking with people with whom you have differences without abandoning your own beliefs and yet looking for common ground which may enable both parties to co-create a new path from the present situation. In every heart there is ambiguity; in every ideology there are parts that dont fit."

We are excited about this opportunity and hope to see you there!

About Ericka Huggins:

As an activist, former political prisoner & leader in the Black Panther Party, educator & student Ericka Huggins has devoted her life to the equality of all beyond the boundaries of age, culture, class, gender, sexual orientation or ability.

For the past 30 years she has lectured around the country and internationally on issues related to the well-being of women, children & youth; incarceration; education; & the role of spiritual practice in sustaining activism and promoting change.

She spent 14 years in the Black Panther Party--the highlight being her eight years as Director of the renowned Oakland Community School from 1973-1981. During that time she became both the first Black person & the first woman appointed to the Alameda Co. Board of Education. Ericka continues to teach today.

Ericka believes as a teacher she must be a student; as a student she must be a teacher. She writes poetry. She reads to hone her critical thinking skills. And she believes that we learn best by engaging one another as we serve the world.
