Operavised! with special guest, Lisa Rowland!
Operavised! will perform a fully-improvised, fully-sung musical, with special guest, Lisa Rowland, and the fabulous Joshua Raul Brody on keys!
Operavised! are Katherine Ahern*, Rebecca Castelli, Michael Fleming, Liz Garfinkle, and Craig Gaspian. We are classically-trained singer-improvisers, performing long-form improvised operas in different styles (including classical, pop, rock, jazz), based on audience-suggestions, the whims of our accompanist, and each other's offers. (*Katherine will be on holiday in London 6/8, boo!).
Lisa Rowland is a company member and coach at BATS Improv, a lecturer at Stanford University, creator of Awkward Dinner Party, and has just launched the rave-reviewed improv show, The Bechdel Test! Joshua Raul Brody has been the Music Director of BATS Improv, basically since before it was BATS, and has done more to make your favorite local improvisers (and Beatles fans) sound good than you can imagine! We are very excited to be joining the stage with these illustrious musical-improvisers!
Why Operavised? "Opera" means different things to different people, but to us, it's musical theater with the emphasis on the music. We avoid spoken dialog, instead using the traditional recitative/aria format, where the recit moves the story along and the catchy, melodic, arias highlight our characters' emotions. We learned this format by studying the classics: from Mozart to Puccini to Sondheim to Rent. We don't know which genre we'll sing until we're singing it, but once we start singing, we know we're at our best.
