Sacred Masterworks: Lauridsen + Durufle
Rounding out its first year with Jason Sabino, the Chorale presents two of the most iconic masterworks for choir and organ: Maurice Duruflés Requiem, Op. 9, and Morten Lauridsens Lux Aeterna, both featuring renowned organist Dan Miller.
The Requiem is based on themes from the Gregorian funeral mass, with luxuriant harmonies for the choir, a haunting cello line, and stunning solo pieces. 2017 marks the 70th anniversary of the Requiems premiere in 1947.
The Lux Aeterna for choir and organ premiered in Portland 20 years ago. Lauridsen says, On Lux Aeterna ... I like to draw my listener in immediately, to hold their attention, to transport them ... whether its excite them or move them or elate them. Lauridsen himself is a Beaverton native and sang in the choir at Bethel Congregational Church.
