Opera in the Shower

Presented by Rachel Parish and Audrey Gamez.

A shower-shaped fountain appears in the park, recycling water as it runs. From within, an opera singer, dressed in an old fashioned bathing suit, shower cap and with a scrub brush, sings from her repertoire in an outdoor shower. Beautiful and powerful song emanates from the shower: Nature-themed arias are interspersed with operatic renditions of water themed songs such as Row, row, row your boat. The piece is fun, simple and surprising. It puts an ordinary, daily, private experience into a surprising public context and heightens it through the use of Opera.  Opera in the Shower is a playful meditation on the use of water in our daily lives.

Part of the Arts Brookfield Series at Zuccotti Park. Arts Brookfield presents exciting, world-class cultural experiences to hundreds of thousands of people for free each year in both indoor and outdoor public spaces at Brookfields premier properties.

Underwater New York / Coney Island Creek mini-residency

A four-hour exploration and residency at Coney Island Creek.

Artists and storytellers have long drawn inspiration from New York's cityscape, but under the waters that define our islands is another landscape entirely, every bit as gritty and urgent, as lonely and cluttered, as deadly, nonsequitous, singular and Siren as the City itself.

Join Underwater New York editors Nicki Pombier Berger and Helen Georgas for an exploration and residency at Coney Island Creek. Described as a onetime "rumrunners haven and a dumping ground for everything from bodies to old cars" the creek continues to hold the wreckage and memories of New York's shipping history, including a half-submerged home-made submarine, and the timbers of ancient whalers.
Come prepared to explore and create. Bring sturdy shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.

TRYST/Sunk Shore

Join TRYST (Clarinda Mac Low, Paul Benney, and Carolyn Hall) for a roving future history of lower Manhattan. Walk through an imagined tomorrow and discuss how the city landscape will change over the coming years.

Sea levels are rising, and New York City is surrounded by a series of complex waterways. The borders of Manhattan island have been expanded through landfill and scavenged soil from construction, covering over creeks and streams. Marshes have been drained and filled and formed into streets.

During Superstorm Sandy the highest flood tide came up to the level of the pre-contact island, a premonition of whats to come. When the water rises again, what will the tip of Manhattan become? Venice in Battery Park? A series of creeks all through the Financial District?

Embody and invent the new watery reality through observation, physical adventure, and a series of pop-up interactive shared imaginings of a future existence.

The Play About the Bridge

Artist Nancy Nowaceks quest to reconnect Brooklyn and Governors Island.

The Play About the Bridge, staged for Zuccotti Park, uses a single actor and a dozen office chairs to reimagine artist Nancy Nowaceks quest to build a bridge to reconnect Brooklyn and Governors Island (once connected by a walkable sandbar at low tide). Though her vision is clear and persistent, the forces with which she must engagenatural, political, economic, and bureaucraticconstruct a never-ending field of obstacles through which she and the bridge must navigate towards success, always just on the edge of failure.

Collect Pond: Waters Past and Water Futures

Presented by Rachel Stevens

Since Europeans arrived in Lower Manhattan, water has been a contentious commodity and continues to be a flashpoint for struggles between private enterprise and human rights. Collect Pond, a 48 acre, 60 foot deep freshwater pond, used to occupy the land from the court houses to the edge of Chinatown in Lower Manhattan until it became polluted and was filled in. Chase Company, founded by Aaron Burr, was a private water distribution company that hoarded profits meant to provide clean water from tributaries feeding Collect Pond and started Chase Bank.

During this walking tour, discussion and augmented reality visualization of Collect Pond we will trace the edges of this lost body of water and unpack histories and futures tying water to finance and speculation, from Collect Pond to Hurricane Sandy and beyond.

Mespeatches: a performance on the Newtown Creek by Sto Len

Maspeth, Queens was originally called Mespeatches by the Native American tribe of the same name who lived in the area. Mespeatches translates to at the bad water place.

Printmaker and performance artist Sto Len has been creating mono prints at the bad water place (the waters of the Newtown Creek to be exact) for the past 2 years. Working en plein air from a rowboat, Sto uses a process similar to paper marbling to print directly off of the patches of oil and debris floating on the surface. The resulting works are both beautifully patterned and effectively troubling as they offer us a grim reflection of an environmental disaster many would rather ignore.

For this on-site performance, Sto will lead a seance from his boat to ask the Creek for forgiveness while creating a ceremonial print in its honor.

Freshkills Park Tour

At 2,200 acres, when it is completed Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park. The transformation of what was formerly the worlds largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination -- the largest park development in New York City in over 100 years -- makes the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape.

Visit closed sections of the landfill-to-park project on this van tour with Marie Villere and parks staff and learn about the changing landscape and the ways that artists engage the public with the sites history, current conditions and future through performances, activities and installations.

36.5/Manahatta

36.5 / Mannahatta is a one-time performance in Zuccotti Park that invites three performers (and the public if they choose to participate) to connect with the tidal shift in the water surrounding the city and the streams below that were buried under layers of dirt and concrete long ago. The movement is based on Sarah Cameron Sundes ongoing series of works, 36.5 / a durational performance with the sea, where the public is invited to participate by standing in the water for an extended period of time and by marking the passing hours on the shore with a series of choreographed movements.

Part of the Arts Brookfield Series at Zuccotti Park. Arts Brookfield presents exciting, world-class cultural experiences to hundreds of thousands of people for free each year in both indoor and outdoor public spaces at Brookfields premier properties.
