Journeys
VCU students, Christine Wyatt and Jelani Taylor, will showcase their choreographic works in Journeys- an interdisciplinary dance project funded by VCUarts. Journeys will showcase several artistic voices responding to the complexity in post-adolescent struggles. In addition, a collection of curated artworks and visuals inspired by the dance pieces will be on display in a pre-show gallery. The works are responses to the dualities in the challenges young adults face such as experiencing loss and over-attachment, ugliness in manufacturing external beauty, contending with the complexity of identity, and understanding the line between sexuality and sensuality. The choreographers seek to engage the audience with kinetic storytelling and inquiry to deepen their investigations of self and the systems, societal norms, life choices and personal truths that shape their reality through dance.
