#ShoutYourAbortion presents "Life's Work" Author/Doctor Willie Parker in Conversation with Martha Plimpton
#ShoutYourAbortion (SYA) is proud to present a live conversation with abortion provider Doctor Willie Parker and actress/activist Martha Plimpton, with introduction by Lindy West, SYA's Amelia Bonow, and Surge Northwest. Doctor Parker, an outspoken Christian reproductive justice advocate and one of few abortion providers in the American South, is the author of the best-selling book "Life's Work, a Moral Argument for Choice." "Life's Work" chronicles Doctor Parker's journey from a poverty-stricken upbringing in Alabama, to that of a comfortable private physician living in Hawaii who refused to perform abortions for moral reasons, to his current life as abortion provider in the Deep South. "Life's Work"is an articulation of the moral argument for abortion that pro-choice America has been waiting for.
Doctor Parker will read from and speak on his new book, his Christian faith, and his life of personal and professional experience in abortion care, followed by a conversation with actress Martha Plimpton, well-known for her work as a film and theater actress as well as her staunch activism on abortion and reproductive rights in the USA. --- "I wish everyone in America would read this book." -Gloria Steinem
"...a beacon of hope and a call to action." -Cecile Richards --- Doctor Willie Parker sits on the boards of institutions at the forefront of the fight for reproductive justice, including as the chair of the board of Physicians for Reproductive Health. He is the recipient of Planned Parenthood's Margaret Sanger Award, and appeared on Ebony's Power 100 list. He has been recognized widely for his work, including in Slate, Jezebel, Cosmopolitan, NPRs Morning Edition, Salon and in "Trapped" (Trilogy Films), a documentary about the legal battle to keep abortion clinics open in the South.
Martha Plimpton is a United States citizen, actress, and sometimes writer based in New York. She has appeared in over 35 films, dozens of television programs, and on stage in theaters large and small for over 30 years. She has been politically active since she was a teenager, marching and advocating on a personal and political level for women's reproductive freedom for over 30 years.
Lindy West is a columnist at The Guardian, a contributor to This American Life, and a freelance writer whose work focuses on feminism, social justice, humor, and body image. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Cosmopolitan, GQ, Vulture, Jezebel, The Stranger, and others. She is the founder of I Believe You, It's Not Your Fault, an advice blog for teens, and co-founder of #ShoutYourAbortion. Her first book, a memoir called Shrill, is out now from Hachette Books.
#ShoutYourAbortion is a social movement committed to changing culture, building community, and supporting those who want to share the truth: abortion is a normal medical procedure which allows many people to live their best lives. SYA works creatively to expand cultural attitudes by building spaces for people to discuss abortion on their own terms, in art, online, and in real life. SYA and local design firm Civilization recently won a prestigious People's Voice Webby Award in the Activism category.
