What do you do when one of the interconnected systems which malfunctions is your own? BLOOD SUGAR is a 70-minute solo performance which explores theater artist Diana Wyenn's own body and the chronic noncommunicable disease it carriesType 1 Diabetesas a vehicle for transmission. Weaving personal narrative with her memory of actor Mark Rylances 2004 performance in William Shakespeares Richard II and excerpts from philosopher Jean-Luc Nancys essay Lintrus (The Intruder), Wyenn uses text, voice over, and choreography to challenge the binary of health and illness, while searching for balance in the bardo, the liminal space between life and death. BLOOD SUGAR examines the personal and the existential, the historic and the artistic, the stories we tell ourselves and the truths we find hard to believe.
BLOOD SUGAR was developed in collaboration with co-writer Guy Zimmerman, directed by Wyenn and Zimmerman, with designs from John Zalewski, Joey Guthman, Rebecca Carr, and voiceovers by Lauren Campedelli and Laban Pheidias.
This showing will be followed by a discussion with diabetes clinical manager Lauren Decker (MS, RD, CDE) and nutritional expert Matt Ruscigno (MPH, RD).
