U.T.O.P.I.A. Seattle, in partnership with the Planning Committee for the State of Washington Samoa Week, will be putting on our first annual Tala Measina Pacific Fashion Show. Samoa Week is our primary week to celebrate the contributions of Samoans to the Pacific Northwest and UTOPIA has been asked to participate this year.
U.T.O.P.I.A. Seattle has decided to create a platform, an event that seeks to honor our local Pacific designers in the Pacific Northwest who work tirelessly to cloth our communities. This event will be an opportunity for our Pacific designers to showcase their unique skills, incorporating South Pacific elements in their work. Our categories include measina (sacred traditional), fiafia (modern), lotu (religious), sarong & tini (wedding).
Along with showcasing our designers, UTOPIA will have a platform to engage our community in furthering the work of justice for our faafafine, faatama, mahu, fakaleiti, takatapui, and queer and trans* pacific members. We will do this through the inclusion of our members in the show and by highlighting the work we have done and plan to do in gaining awareness within our own communities. This event serves a dual function, it is a fashion show, but we also plan to use this event to engage our community in the mission of U.T.O.P.I.A. Seattle.
With special performances by UTOPIA Seattle, winners of the 2017 Samoan Arts & Academics competition - Federal Way High School "Le Lumana'i Ole Pasefika", Pacific Food booths, and much more. Wednesday, July 5th, 2017, 5-9pm McGavick Conference Center 4500 Steilacoom Blvd SW Lakewood, WA 98499
