Cornerstone Catholic Conference 2017
Thank you for your interest in the 2017 Cornerstone Catholic Conference. Online registration is now closed. You can still register at the door. Registration at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center will open at 4:00 pm on Friday, Oct. 20, and at 7:30 am on Saturday, Oct. 21. Those registering at the door may not be able to choose some of the workshop sessions due to space limitations. We look forward to seeing you this Friday and Saturday.

The Bishops of Washington State are sponsoring the statewide Cornerstone Catholic Conference to inspire and educate Catholics to protect human life and promote the common good. The conference will assist Catholics to enter the public square more fully to discuss and debate the pressing issues of the day.

The outstanding speakers and informational displays at October's conference will present resources to assist families, parishes and communities. Participants will leave the conference more invigorated in the Catholic commitment to life and justice and more confident in speaking about current pressing issues, in a way that is both inviting and convincing. A goal of the Cornerstone Conference is to build a sense of solidarity among everyone in society, uniting hands and hearts in promoting human dignity and the common good. Join the Bishops in taking up this important work for the Church and society.

Keynote speakers for the conference are:

** Helen Alvaré - "Transforming the World: New Ways of Seeing the Other"

Too often our divided society uses labels in relating to other people. Is it possible to see other people as Jesus sees them? Would stopping the labeling of people allow us to marvel at their beautiful complexity? Professor Alvaré will explore how following Jesus Christ will not only change us but holds the promise of transforming the world. She will also share insights from her new book, Putting Childrens Interests First: U.S. Family Law and Policy.

** Ralph McCloud - "Liberating Our Neighbors from Poverty"

For over 40 years, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has sought to empower people living in poverty to liberate themselves. Through grants to organizations that include low-income people in leadership roles, CCHD has helped transform communities across the country. Ralph McCloud, the Director of CCHD, will highlight stories of triumph in the U.S. Bishops program against poverty, including the PREPARES ministry in Washington State.

** Bishops of Washington State

Archbishop Peter Sartain (Seattle), Bishop Thomas Daly (Spokane), and Bishop Joseph Tyson (Yakima) will reflect on their recent pastoral letter, Who Is My Neighbor: The Face of Poverty in Washington State as well as on the PREPARES ministry.

** Bishop Robert Barron - "The Eucharist: Spiritual Food to Sustain Our Witness"

In his Catholicism series, Bishop Barron points out that the more time spent with the Eucharist, the greater the devotion to justice. For the Church to succeed at its evangelization mission, she must deepen the faithfuls embrace of the Churchs social teaching as an essential part of discipleship. Bishop Barron will also discuss how to nurture a spirituality to enliven the Gospel witness of Catholics.

** LISA GREEN - "PREPARES: JOURNEYING WITH YOUNG FAMILIES"

PREPARES is a Life and Justice initiative of the Washington State Bishops to care for pregnant women, fathers, and their families. PREPARES is a parish-based ministry under the auspices of Catholic Charities agencies that provides services to families from pregnancy to the childs fifth birthday. The workshop will provide an overview of PREPARES in its first three years. Parishioners and recipients of services will relate the change in their lives experienced through PREPARES.

** BISHOP DANIEL FLORES - "SEEING IMMIGRANTS AS OUR NEIGHBORS"

Bishop Flores will draw upon Catholic teaching and his eight years of serving as the Bishop of Brownsville, Texas, to help us see immigrants through the eyes of our Christian faith. He will share who immigrants are and why they risk their lives to come to the United States. He will reflect what our Catholic faith requires of us when tens of millions of people are forced from their homes by poverty and violence. Bishop Flores will examine pastoral responses in light of the Christian message to welcome the stranger.

** RICHARD DOERFLINGER - "STANDING UP FOR LIFE"

In an increasingly divisive political landscape, how can Catholics advance life and justice? Reflecting back on his 36-year career with the U.S. Bishops Pro-Life Activity Secretariat, Richard Doerflinger will share his insights into how the Catholic approach to difficult issues has and continues to transform the political process. Through adherence to moral principles, not only do Catholics advocate for vulnerable people but they also strive to love those who have different political visions. Find out how a Gospel witness can reshape political equations.

** DR. MIMI PATTISON - "HARD CHOICES AT THE END OF LIFE"

The dying process can entail health care decisions that are stressful and not easily understood. As Medical Director of Franciscan Hospice in Tacoma, Dr. Pattison will share her experiences working with patients and families facing life-threatening illnesses. She will examine decisions about treatment, including artificial nutrition and hydration, and life support, in light of Catholic teaching.

** TRICIA HOYT - "KNITTING TOGETHER LIFE AND JUSTICE IN PARISHES"

Too often parishes suffer from the same divisions and exclusions that have become common in society. This tension is often experienced in parishes with life and justice issues. As the Director of Evangelization of St. Patrick Church in Scottsdale, AZ, Tricia Hoyt brings a fresh vision and reconciling presence that encourages new ways to become transformative and life-giving communities.

** KATIE LODJIC - "EFFECTIVE DIALOGUE ON ABORTION"

Learn about the greatest human rights injustice of our day: abortion. Katie Lodjic, Northwest Regional Coordinator of Students for Life, will explore why Catholics are pro-life and explain how to defend pro-life beliefs in a secular world. She will examine the tough questions raised in a society that has supported the legalization of abortion. The workshop will provide the dialogue tools needed to change people's hearts and minds.
