Holy Flute (Shakuhachi Unleashed) - Album Release Concert with Cornelius Boots and Mark Deutsch
New Music Mystics Concert Series.

This is an official album release show for the album HOLY FLUTE which is Volume One of the Shakuhachi Unleashed series: these are virtuosic revelations for solo shakuhachi, expanding and evolving the classical Zen repertoire rooted in aliveness, awareness and nature and influenced by extensive training in rock, jazz, metal, blues, orchestral and experimental music.  Shakuhachi is a specialized, root-end bamboo flute that emerged as a meditation instrument from within Japanese Zen Buddhism.  Cornelius is a licensed (shihan) shakuhachi master, studying shakuhachi since 2001, an award-winning composer, woodwind innovator, teacher and international performer and lecturer.  Holy Flute is his 12th full-length album as a leader, including rock, funk, chamber music and solo bamboo albums.

Joining Cornelius is long-time friend and collaborator Mark Deutsch with a solo set on the one-and-only Bazantar.  The Bazantar is a five-string acoustic bass, fitted with an additional twenty-nine sympathetic strings and four drone strings. The instrument possesses a melodic range of over five octaves, while its sympathetic range spans four octaves. This results in an interplay between melodic, sympathetic, and drone strings which weaves an unexpected landscape of resonance that is remarkably rich in texture.

Mark Deutsch is a visionary artist with a background in non-linear mathematics, sacred systems and cosmology. He has trained and performed extensively in orchestral, jazz, avant-garde, improvisational, and world music traditions on the bass and sitar.  In the late 1980s, Mark Deutsch began exploring North Indian classical music. The subtlety of this style, combined with his pursuits on the sitar, inspired him to delve deeper into the study of music. He started exploring the mathematics of sound, particularly music's underlying frequency structure. This search revealed nonlinear mathematical patterns that exist in sound and are found universally in the natural world, including the over-tone series, fractals, the golden mean, seashells, and the Fibonacci series.

In depth introduction to the Bazantar can be seen here:
