Mudiki - Sculpture of Nature - with artist Jean Michel Dissake
Artist Jean Michel Dissake, from Yaounde Cameroon, will teach a one day workshop on Sunday, April 30, at Aspen Grove near Raleigh. Jean Michel's sculptures utilize natural materials and recycled objects, vines, wood, termite dust, metals and wire, which are symbolic of the essential balance and interconnection between humanity with nature. "The vine to Dissake represents many connections between people and nature, between technology and nature, and people of different countries and beliefs." Jean Michel's exhibit, 'Cameroon: Force of Nature' was held in Durham at The Scrap Exchange in March/April, 2017. See 3/27 article in The Herald Sun http://www.heraldsun.com/entertainment/artsculture/article141118138.html
The workshop titled 'Mudiki - Sculpture of Nature' - is a unique opportunity to work with Jean Michel, learn about his philosophy and artistic process and build your own sculpture.
About the Artist: Jean Michel Dissake is from the Pongo village on the banks of the Mongo River in Cameroon in west Africa and was born in the capital of Yaounde. Jean Michel has had solo exhibits in Denmark and France. The artist is in the US for his exhibit, Cameroon: L'Elan Vital (Cameroon: Force of Nature) and in residence at the Scrap Exchange in Durham, NC until April 15.
The exhibit, Cameroon: Force of Nature, is described here - Constructed of found materials, the exhibit is an amazing fusion of painting and sculpture, inspired by the customs of the Pongo village on the banks of the Mongo River and informed by a contemporary sensibility. Dissakes intention is to find a balance between the natural environment and the human footprint. Born in 1983 in Yaoundé Cameroon, Jean Michel graduated with an Economics degree from the University of Douala. Unsatisfied with his career choice and encouraged by family members, he turned to artistic training. Dissake was mentored by the internationally acclaimed Cameroonian artist Joël Mpah Dooh.
The Workshop:
During the workshop Jean Michel will talk about how he began as a sculptor, his motivation to use natural and recycled materials as well as share the importance of dialogue with the materials in nature. You will have an opportunity to see his work in progress as he demonstrates some methods.
