BESSIE award-winning choreographer, Paul Matteson will be returning to Buffalo, New York in May to premier work featuring seven local area performers. Melanie Aceto, Elyssa Bourke, Anne Burnidge, Nancy Hughes, Rachel Keane, Mary Grace Sullivan, and Kerry Ring originally began working with Matteson during his week-long residency in January, 2016. Since then, the cast under long-distance council of Matteson have utilized technology and unconventional means to keep the work, entitled That time I pinned you down, alive and thriving. Described by Matteson as, A dance thrown together with care, the cast and choreographer delved into a world that, explores sudden moments of harshness within close relationships.
In addition to the premier of That time I pinned you down, this evening of dance will feature Mattesons solo and duet work as well as material from local choreographer Nancy Hughes. In her piece Why Be a Woman?, Hughes, has been inspired by collaboration with dancers from Nichols High School and the Buffalo Contact Jam. This work, co-created with Sophia Roberts and Courtney Barrow, is a continued exploration of the importance of being an authentic woman in current times politically, emotionally, and physically. Joining Matteson in a duet titled Note the Self is fellow BESSIE award-winner, Jennifer Nugent. Matteson and Nugent, 16-year collaborators, will showcase what he describes as, an exquisite history of coming together and falling apart.
Aptly named after Matteson and Nugents duet work, Note the Self is set to be presented as an hour and a half long concert. This family friendly evening of dance will take place May 13th at 7:30pm, located at Flickinger Theater housed in Nichols High School. Tickets will be sold online and at the door for $10. Artists Biographies:
Paul Matteson (Choreographer/Performer) explores methods for generating inventive personal movement within collaborative choreography. He lived for many years in New York City and was a principal dancer with the internationally touring Bill T. Jones / Arnie Zane Dance Company from 2008-2012. His duet collaborations with Jennifer Nugent were presented in NYC by Danspace Project, Symphony Space, Dance Theater Workshop, and received National Performance Network (NPN) Support for performances at The Colony Theater in Miami, Florida. From 2000-2005, Paul was a member of David Dorfman Dance and Race Dance, receiving a New York Dance and Performance Award (BESSIE) for his "Body of Work" in 2002. He also performed for Terry Creach, Peter Schmitz, Kota Yamazaki, Chamecki/Lerner, Jamie Cunningham, Neta Pulvermacher, Susan Sgorbati, Helena Franzen, and Keith Johnson. Paul joined Amherst College and Mount Holyoke College in the fall of 2012 as an Assistant Professor of Dance and is a 2014 Massachusetts Cultural Council Award recipient in Choreography.
Jennifer Nugent (Choreographer/Performer) danced with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance company from 2009-2014 and David Dorfman Dance from 1999-2007 receiving a New York Dance and Performance Award (BESSIE) for her work in the company. In 1998 Jennifer moved to New York City to study with Daniel Lepkoff. She has also danced with Lisa Race, Yin Mei, Nina Winthrop, Doug Elkins, Martha Clarke, Bill Young, Colleen Thomas, Kate Weare, Gerri Houlihan, Barbara Sloan and Dale Andre. Jennifer has performed her own work and duet collaborations with Paul Matteson in NYC and throughout the United States, Korea, and Vietnam. She teaches regularly in NYC at Movement Research. Jennifer has also been on faculty at the American Dance Festival and Bates Dance Festival, and recently a guest artist at Bard College and the Experimental Theater Wing at NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
Nancy Hughes (Choreographer/Performer) Originally from Texas, has been living in Buffalo for six years. Hughes is an educator, performer, choreographer and event organizer who co-facilitates regular events for contact improvisation and contemporary dancers. Hughes has been awarded grants from NYS DanceForce, Northampton Arts Council and Key Bank and has received sponsorship from Harold Grinspoon. Nancy Hughes produces dance events throughout the year. This includes the Tuesday Contemporary Dance Series, Buffalo Sunday Contact Improv Jam, Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Arts Youth Performance Workshop, Mission Improvable, and is currently working on a new guest artist series. Her work as a performer and choreographer has been performed across the U.S. as well as in Paris, France and Toronto, Canada. She can be seen performing in Buffalo with BCIJPG, Anne Burnidge Dance and others in theaters, museums, galleries, peoples homes and silos.
Hughes is currently the director of Center Dance. Center Dance is an emergence focusing upon movement, wellness, and education. Through interdisciplinary performance, movement training, community outreach and the presentation of learning opportunities Center Dance strives to increase Buffalos gravity as an international hub for creative exchange between dance artists.
Melanie Aceto (Performer) is a modern dancer, choreographer, educator and researcher. Her creative interests are in interdisciplinary solo and large group works. Melanies choreography has been performed nationally and internationally in Toronto, Guatemala, Germany, Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, in New York City at The Kitchen, the Studio Museum in Harlem, Ailey CitigroupTheater, and John Ryan Theater, among others, and in Buffalo at venues including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Burchfield Penney Arts Center. Current research projects include Choreographic Lineage, a web-based resource presenting the lineage of dance artists (www.choreographiclineage.buffalo.edu). Melanie earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in dance from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and is currently an Associate Professor at the University at Buffalo teaching all levels of modern technique, improvisation and choreography. www.melanieaceto.com
Kerry Ring (Performer) Clinical Assistant Professor of Dance at the State University of New York at Buffalo (UB), earned her BFA from the University of New Mexico and her MFA from Mills College. Kerry directs and choreographs for the UB Zodiaque Dance Company. She has performed as a company member with the Nevada Dance Theatre, Delta Festival Ballet, the Santa Fe Opera, Bill Evans Dance Company, and Molissa Fenley and Dancers. She is core ballet faculty for Dance Masters of America and serves as Ballet Mistress for modern dance company LehrerDance. She is certified in Kriya Yoga and Ultra Barre, and is a frequent contributor to Dance Studio Life.
Rachel Keane (Performer) With the belief that art is naturally a collaborative process, Keane seeks to cultivate work in a manner that allows each member involved agency to create art that is specifically their own. Within this setting, Keane finds herself interested in pushing the boundaries of the traditional relationship between viewer and performer. A graduate of State University of New York: The College at Brockport, Keane has studied an eclectic form of release technique. By use of current technology, Keane hopes to challenge the way dance is created by experimenting with the proximity of artists involved in each individual process. Elyssa Bourke (Performer) graduated from Hofstra University with a BA in dance in 2001. After graduation, Bourke became a scholarship student at the Merce Cunningham studio. While living in New York, Bourke danced with Anita Cheng, Jeffery Bauer and Tysan Dance. Bourke moved back to Buffalo in 2005 to study Chiropractic Practice at DYouville College and currently works as a chiropractor while also teaching yoga at East Meets West Yoga and Healing Waters. Bourke has worked with Buffalo Contemporary Dance, Nimbus Dance and was a founding participant in The Habit Dance Project. She has been happily working with Anne Burnidge since 2011.
Anne Burnidge (Performer) is a contemporary dancer, educator and choreographer originally from the Chicago area. She earned her MFA in choreography from Ohio State University and a certification in Laban Movement Analysis from the Integrated Movement Studies program at the University of Utah. Burnidge is an Associate Professor of Dance at SUNY Buffalo where she serves as the Director of Graduate Studies. In addition to dancing in her own work, Burnidge has performed in works by dance luminaries Bebe Miller, Meredith Monk, and Maguy Marin and has been a company member of Helander Dance Theatre, Open Door Theatre, and Buffalo Contemporary Dance. Performing highlights include Managua, Nicaragua, Cholula, Mexico, and the Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder, Colorado.
