Drumming Up History: A Demonstration of Styles from the Late 1800s
Community Center
Lindstrom, MN
Share this event:

In the first of two unique presentations that are part history-part performance, Kelli Rae Tubbs uses antique drums to demonstrate the early development of the modern drum set and the styles of drumming found in the popular American music of the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The Thursday, May 11, event includes a demonstration of double drumming and ragtime drumming, styles popular in the late 1800s.

Another program being held Friday, May 12, features traditional (Dixieland) jazz from the 1910s and 1920s.

When Kelli became interested in the authentic performance of drumming techniques from the turn of the last century, she was awarded grants by the East Central Regional Arts Council to study with Daniel Glass, an internationally-known drummer, author, educator, and historian on historical drum set performance.  Glass is one of a handful of drummers worldwide with expertise in these distinctive styles.

Kelli is the bandleader of two local bands, "Swing and a Miss" and "The Whistlin' Dixies."  As a singing drummer and percussionist, she has performed jazz, country, pop, bluegrass, and more.

She is a member of the Sabian Education Network and the D'Addario Education Collective networks for drumming educators and, in 2016, was appointed to the Scholarly Research Committee of the Percussive Arts Society.

Kelli is a regular contributor to "Tom Tom Magazine" and, as a music historian, she is working to preserve our unique American musical heritage through the restoration of antique drums and performances of early American jazz.

She is currently writing a book with Daniel Glass entitled "The Postcard Project:  A Snapshot of Drumming Life, 1900-1930," due to be released in 2017.

This evening of music and discussion was developed with support from the East Central Regional Arts Council and the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.  (www.ecrac.org)
