Randal Bays, Irish fiddle & guitar, with John Coyne, bouzouki and vocals
The real Irish fiddle sound... not Riverdance, not Danny Boy... is the sound of intense joy, pain, defiance and utter abandon all rolled into a modal stew unlike anything else in the musical world. It's small music, intimate, best heard late at night in a smoky, half-dark bar. And surprisingly, one of the best Irish fiddlers around these days, someone who really knows how to conjure those sounds in concert, is an American born musician named Randal Bays. You may not have heard of him but he's been playing Irish fiddle for more than thirty years and is widely recognized as a master, with a special passion for the traditional styles of rural Clare and Galway. He's "among the best Irish style fiddlers of his generation", according to Fiddler Magazine truly a musicians musician.
Bays is also famed as a fingerstyle guitarist, having recorded two seminal albums with fiddler Martin Hayes, also with contributions to the Masters of the Irish Guitar CD on Shanachie Records, plus his own cult classic album of solo guitar work, Oyster Light.
Randal Bays will be in concert Sunday, May 14 at 7pm at LISTEN performance space in Greensboro. He'll be appearing with Limerick's John Coyne on bouzouki and vocals, an extraordinarily talented musician whose intensity is a perfect match for Bays's fierce fiddling.
