HOMEPLACE by Claudette Alexander-Thomason
A homeplace is more than a house and a piece of land. It is the energy and spirit of the village and its people, who struggled, worked and loved, brought us into that world and left us there, alone. In quiet moments, we can hear their words on the wind; we can feel their dignity in the face of indignity. We can sense their strength, reclaim our birthright, and leave a legacy for those who have yet to arrive. But this is not an easy task. To succeed, we must face conflict, survive the deaths of those we love, learn difficult truths about ourselves and our families, achieve a sense of acceptance, and reclaim what is ours.
