Princeton Refugee & Clay Project presents: A Night of Music from Aleppo with Yousef Shamoun
The Princeton Refugee Project and Princeton Clay Project are proud to host Yousef Shamoun and the Tarab Ensemble for a Night of Music from Aleppo.
Concert from 7:00pm - 9:00pm --- Doors open 6:30 PM

All proceeds will benefit university scholarships for Syrian refugee students through the Amal Foundation.
Yousef Shamoun was born in Aleppo, Syria, home to a strong tradition of composing and singing the Muwashshahat and the Qudud Halabiya. It is also known for its Tarab, a musical style which means enchantment." Yousef belongs to the school of great Aleppian singers such as Sabah Fakhri,Mohamad Khairy and Omar Al-Batsh. The concert will feature Muwashshahat and Qudud Halabiya as well as vocal and instrumental improvisations. Often considered to be the epitome of songs in the Arab worldespecially in the Levantthe Muwashshahat are strophic poems set to music. Of Andalusian inspiration, they treat the themes of love, longing and spirituality. They continue to be cherished and even composed by Syrians at home and abroad. The Qudud Halabiya are lighter songs in both standard and colloquial Arabic that are well-known around the Arab world today.

About the Organizers:
We are a community of graduate and undergraduate students passionate about raising awareness for the global refugee crisis, advocating for refugee and migrant rights, and fundrasing for fellow refugee students trying to complete their higher education. We work with the Amal foundation, which is currently helping support two Syrian refugee students at Zarqa University, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The Venue:
Nassau Presbyterian Church has been working to resettle and host refugees for over 20 years, and has been a key feature of life in Princeton since the 18th Century. They have recently helped to resettle a Syrian family in the Princeton area.

The Beneficiary:
Founded and directed by students, the Amal Foundation seeks to serve fellow students caught amidst the refugee crisis. Our signature project, The Amal Scholarship Fund, brings amal - the Arabic word for hope - to refugees in Jordan through scholarships to nearby Jordanian universities. The Fund currently targets Syrian refugee youth living in Za'atari Refugee Camp who have demonstrated a commitment to community service and leadership.
