RVA Dance Collective Presents A Decade of Dance
It's hard to believe that RVA Dance Collective has hit their 10th anniversary season as a professional company.
RVA Dance Collective is excited to announce an amazing lineup of choreography for this special anniversary performance.
Directors Jess Burgess and Danica Kalemdaroglu will present a new collaboratively choreographed piece for the full company, alongside new individual choreography by Burgess and a re-staging of Kalemdaroglu's 2010 "Behind the Frame."
We are thrilled to have guest choreographers Julia Vessey and Vicki Fink set work on the company as well. Fink is a well-known Richmond choreographer that has danced professionally in New York, Philadelphia and in Richmond, Virginia. Her choreography has been showcased at the 1998 American Dance Festival, 1999 American College Dance Festival, 2000 Philadelphia Fringe Festival and 2010 and 2013 Regional and National Dance Festival. Her dance training and teaching style is an eclectic blend of somatic dance and traditional modern dance forms.
Julia A. Vessey received her undergraduate dance training at James Madison University (JMU) and then pursued a graduate degree at Arizona State University (ASU) graduating in 2008, summa cum laude and as Graduate Choreographer of the Year. In 2009 she was accepted into the world-renowned Tokyo based Butoh company, Dairakudakan. Vessey joined them for their 2009- 2010 performance season where she learned the movement philosophies of butoh master Maro Akaji, the founder of the company. Vessey also studied under other butoh greats Takuya Muramatsu, Mukai Kumotaro, and Yoshito Ohno. Vessey is now one of the few westerners to have such an insight to the butoh world. Dairakudakans satellite USA based Butoh Company. She will premiere a new butoh work for the collective.
Kevin LaMarr Jones, Artistic Director of CLAVES Unidos will set a new work on special student guest performers from The Dance Company this year. RVA Dance Collective has invited students to their performances each season in the hopes to inspire new young dancers to continue to dance throughout their adult lives. The professional company will also share the stage with RVA Dance Collective as the guest company for the anniversary performance.
It will be an excellent weekend of inspired and compelling choreography.
