Walk through History: Western Ramapo
The Historical Society of Rockland County Invites You to Join Us for a

Western Ramapo
Walk through History

When: Saturday, April 8, 2017, 9:45 am (rain or shine)
Where: Ramapo Saltbox Environmental Research Center (ERC)
Price: $5/person (pre-paid reservations are required)

Join us for a walk into yesteryear.

This is an opportunity to view a little-known and very historic area of Rockland County that has remained largely unchanged. Storyteller/environmental educator Chuck Stead will lead us, starting at the Ramapo Saltbox Environmental Research Center (ERC) on Torne Valley Road. Topics will include the history of the iron mines and ironworks, the Native American community, environmental issues, and the Torne Brook.

Be sure to bring water and wear appropriate footwear for a wooded walk. Surfaces may include smooth asphalt, uneven gravel, and rocky dirt paths, with mud likely. (If the mud is severe, we will reroute.)

This event is NOT stroller friendly.

Directions

Via Route 59 West: Turn right at the foot of Main Street (railroad station area) in Suffern and continue straight until the right turn onto Torne Valley Road, Hillburn, BEFORE the green steel bridge.

Via the Thruway: Take Exit 15A Sloatsburg/Suffern/Hillburn, go right off the ramp, cross the green steel bridge, take first left onto Torne Valley Road, Hillburn.

Once on Torne Valley Road, pass the large recreation center (Joseph T. St. Lawrence Community Center) on the left and continue to the Saltbox, which is also on the left.

Arrive early for limited parking!

Cancellation policy: Due to the overwhelming popularity of the Walks through History, the $5 registration fee is non-refundable. Space is limited for safety. A waiting list will be compiled, and spaces that become available will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Only those who have made full payment can be accommodated.
