My Perestroika with writer and director Robin Hessman
Winner the 2011 Peabody Award and nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, My Perestroika follows five ordinary Russians living in extraordinary times from their sheltered Soviet childhood, to the collapse of the Soviet Union during their teenage years, to the constantly shifting political landscape of post-Soviet Russia. Using first person testimony, verité footage and vintage home movies, Robin Hessman has created an engrossing, deeply humane, at times haunting, and ultimately inspiring documentary in which politics is personal, honesty overshadows ideology, and history progresses one day and one life at a time. The film is essential to understanding Russia as it was, is and might become, but it also provides fresh perspectives on Western societies worth serious discussion.
Director Robin Hessman will give a talk before the film, and will lead a Q&A session after the film. Robin is an award-winning filmmaker and a dynamic speaker who has lived and worked in Russia and the U.S. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and an Associate at Harvard University's Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies.
Generously co-sponsored by the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University.
