          --The New York Times

For 25 years The Waifs have been captivating audiences with their own unique brand of folk rock. To celebrate this remarkable career milestone, the band has released a new album, Ironbark, and will embark on extensive tours throughout Australia and North America.

A lot's happened in the 25 years since Vikki Thorn and her sister Donna Simpson first threw their guitars in the back of a Kombi van and headed up the West Australian coast where they stumbled across Josh Cunningham in a pub in Broome and became The Waifs.  Thorn now has three sons and calls Utah home. Simpson's in Western Australia with a family of her own. Josh Cunningham and his family move back and forth between the US and the sleepy NSW south coastal town of Moruya.  This summer, joined by their regular rhythm section David Ross Macdonald (drums) and Ben Franz (bass), The Waifs will tour the United States in celebration of their 25th Anniversary ...  with a stop in Vermont on Wednesday August 16th at The Bellows Falls Opera House.

The Waifs formed in August 1992 in Albany, Western Australia and spent the next few years busking their way across the continent.  In 2001 they played the prestigious Newport Folk Festival for the first time and were described as the darlings of [that] years festival.  2002 brought, among other things, a tour in England supporting Billy Bragg.  Selected as the support act for Bob Dylans Australian tour, The Waifs went on to join Dylan's North American tour, including a second gig at the Newport Folk Festival.  In 2003 The Waifs won 'Best Roots and Blues Album', 'Best Independent Album', 'Producer of the Year' and 'Engineer of the Year' at the 2003 ARIA Music Awards (Australia's equivalent of the Grammys).  The Waifs have also toured in support of Keith Urban and The John Butler Trio.

In an article in CMT News, Craig Shelburne wrote, "The Waifs might be the most popular festival band you've never heard of. Merlefest: 1,200 albums sold. Telluride: 800 albums. Festival International de Louisiane: 700 albums. Newport Folk Festival: 500 albums. And by the end of their energetic Paradise show in Boston, it was nearly impossible to edge past the dozens of cash-clutching fans at the merchandise table."  He continued, "Onstage, Vikki can wail with the best of them. Donna's rich baritone characterizes her compelling narrative songs. And Cunningham, though singing occasionally, provides a strong, country-influenced backdrop on his hand-built guitar or a ukulele, if you're lucky."

These days the 5 members of the band live on different continents.  Raising kids.  And immersed in individual projects.  But still .. there is a pull to create music.  Together.  With numerous albums under their belt, The Waifs have sold millions of copies and created a fanbase that spans the globe.  A fiercely loyal fanbase who is willing to wait months, and often years, between tours.

Thorn, in an interview printed in No Depression, sums up "We're family and we love to play music together," she adds, "and I feel like that still comes across. The band, the way we still impart that at our shows ... There's a genuine passion and love for what we do and we want to share that with people. And people respond to that -- still. That's always been there, this chemistry, when we play together. It's gotten deeper. We're not sort of young and overly sensitive and emotional, like we used to be. ... All the tension's gone now. There's a real appreciation and gratitude that we can still do it."

Bob Gordon reviewed the first show of their most recent tour in The West Australian stating, "It was an auspicious evening in the history of the Waifs, the opening night of their 25th anniversary tour. Warmth is indeed inherent with this band, who are rightly proud of a quarter-century career. The banter was easy, often comic and always loving. You could be in the kitchen with them rather than watching the Waifs on a concert hall stage. While the sisters bantered on stage, Cunningham was the quiet foil. He's heard it all before. His guitar, however, spoke often, beautifully similar to the way in which George Harrison once spoke with his. It's wonderful to see a band who have come so far down the road, with so much more left in the tank."

Opening for The Waifs will be The Meadows Brothers.  Ian and Dustin Meadows have been wowing audiences in Bellows Falls for over 3 years.  They have performed at Pleasant Valley Brewery, Popolo, the Vermont Roots on The Rails Music Train and this June, 2017 will mark their third year playing the Roots on the River Festival.  We are thrilled to invite them  to perform on the main stage at The Opera House.

Self-described Homegrown Countrified Folked-Up Soulful American Rock-n-Roll Roots Music,  The Meadows Brothers hail from Chester, CT. They grew up surrounded by music as children, which led them to their present day folk-rock project. Their music holds the base of classic folk while pulling in different country and alternative influences.  Sweet harmonies, raw, evocative lyrics, soulful lead guitar riffs and ripping harmonica solos infused with the inevitable brotherly ribbing combine for one hell of a show!

In an interview in No Depression, Red Line Roots writes, "Dustin and Ian initially blew me away with their beautiful harmonies, bluegrass infused folk songs, and witty back and forth banter on stage. As I got to know them more, however, the depth of these two gents really got to me. Their music extends far more into the experimental realm than I initially gave credit to, rock n roll, early roots, blues, and indie rock as of late. Their music is excellent, the latest record is a great collection of pensive and wonderful songs, and if you ever have the chance to see these boys live ... strike that, SEE THESE GUYS LIVE no matter what. They are something special."

Good music for a Good Cause:  Proceeds from this concert will be donated specifically to the Transportation Assistance Program at The Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. The beneficiary of this concert is decidedly local.  And tangible.  There are many for whom the financial burden of getting to Dartmouth for treatment is a real hardship.  A portion of ticket sales will directly impact local cancer patients by providing assistance via gas cards for those who need help covering transportation costs.  We will also have a collection basket at the concert and if you are inclined to donate a bit more, bring along a $25 gas card.  It will be added to the kitty.

A cash bar will be provided by Donovan's.

Many thanks to Applied Bolting Technology, The Inn at Valley Farms, PK's and RAMP ... our corporate sponsors
