DESCRIPTION

One woman bravely performs a magic act in reverse: making invisible illness visible. Anna Sell, a gifted clown, storyteller, and songwriter, presents Sh*t Show: A Story of Invisible Illness April 29th and 30th at The Steep and Thorny Way To Heave, SE Hawthorne Blvd & SE 2nd Ave, Portland, OR 97214 (Under the Hawthorne Bridge). When she was diagnosed with a chronic illness, Sell fought inner demons and social stigmas with the same courage, vulnerability, and charisma that makes her a world-class clown.

A note from the creator:

"I created this piece for many reasons, the foremost being Invisible Illness Advocacy. It is difficult enough struggling with disease without adding the additional layer of invisibility. I find myself uniquely equipped to tackle this. I am a clown. I was born to find humor in the bleakest of moments and laugh through the tears that pour from my face. Every day we are faced with a choice: to accept the hardships we are given or to make lemonade. I chose option number C and made a pie instead. Everyone has a story to tell. We are all living out the story of our lives. Sometimes it feels like we are writing that story, and other times it feels as if someone is dictating for us. I want to empower people to reclaim their lives and their stories through movement and laughter, or through a pie to the face."

This project is supported by the Regional Art and Cultural Council, The Steep and Thorny Way To Heven, Box of Clowns and community donations.
