This evening of Latin jazz features the Eden Prairie High School Jazz Bands along with special guests Ruben Alvarez, Marc Jacoby, Doug Little and Viviana Pintano. In addition to a special evening of music, Cuban cuisine will be available. We recommend purchasing the dinner option ahead of time so we can be sure to have enough food. The pre event dinner purchase options include a Cubano sandwich, rice and beans, and a bottle of water for $11. For the younger kids it includes half of a Cubano sandwich, small portion of rice and beans and a bottle of water for $6. You can purchase the dinner options with your tickets or later. Just don't forget!! By the way, a Cubano sandwich consists sliced ham, pork, swiss cheese, pickle and butter on a French roll. The food that night will be prepared in a local food truck that will be parked outside the East Commons doors.

Dr. Marc Jacoby
Professor of Music at West Chester University of Pennsylvania where he serves as Director of Jazz Studies and teaches in the Applied Music and Music Education programs. He currently directs the Criterions Big Band and Latin Jazz Ensemble. Before joining the faculty at WCU, Dr. Jacoby was on the faculty of the VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, IL. While in Chicago, he played with many of the regions salsa and latin-jazz groups including the Grammy nominated Orquesta 911 mambo big band. He also co-founded the Orquesta Dos Claves, a latin-jazz big band and workshop for Chicago area youth. The ensemble performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival, Illinois Music Educator's Association Conference, Hot House's Jazz en Clave Festival, Chicago Historical Society, Harold Washington Cultural Center, and school jazz festivals around the region.
Dr. Jacoby had a 20-year career in marching music instructing and arranging pit percussion music for many of the top Drum and Bugle Corps including the 1988 DCI Champions Madison Scouts, Blue Devils, Crossmen, Cadets, and Glassmen. Mark Wessels Publications recently released an audio CD of his arrangements for percussion ensemble that accompany the book, A Fresh Approach to Mallet Percussion.
Dr. Jacoby is an Apple Authorized Trainer, an artist/clinician for the Yamaha Corporation and Vic Firth, Inc., a Sibelius Ambassador/Trainer and is on the Educational Advisory Committee for Latin Percussion, Inc. He has been an active performer and clinician and has presented sessions on jazz education and technology at the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic, Music Educator's National Conference, International Association of Jazz Educators, Association for Technology in Music Instruction, TI:ME national and regional conferences, Winter Guard International, Drum Corps International, and many state teachers conventions.

Rubén Alvarez
A Chicago-based Latin percussionist, drum set artist, and educator. His credits include performances and recordings with blues artists John Mayall, and Junior Wells, and Grammy nominee Ramsey Lewis, Victor Goines, Patricia Barber, Slide Hampton, Grammy winner Arturo Sandoval, and 2010 Latin and Latin Grammy nominees Sones De Mexico. He is a 2013 Latin Grammy nominee for his work on the Latin Jazz release Chuchito Valdés Cd Made in Chicago." A member of Chicagos premier Latin jazz ensemble Chévere De Chicago, Rubén leads the Puentes (Bridges) Latin Jazz Ensemble.

Rubén teaches percussion and directs Latin Jazz combos at Roosevelt University, Columbia College Chicago, and Prairie State College, and is a teaching artist for the Jazz Institute of Chicago Jazz Links residency program. He is a featured presenter at national and international music education conferences. Rubén currently serves on the Board of Directors of The Jazz Education Network, the Board of Governors of the Chicago Chapter of the Recording Academy and as Vice President of the Illinois chapter of the Percussive Arts Society. He endorses Latin Percussion ®, Remo percussion products, Vic Firth sticks and mallets, and Zildjian cymbals.

Doug Little
A regarded as an elite jazz musician, an exceptional composer, and a top educator. He hasappeared on over 20 CDs and performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Littlesbackground includes study with jazz Grammy winner Joe Lovano as well as 8 months of music researchin Cuba and 3 months of research in Brazil. He currently leads the ensembles Charanga Tropical, Seven Steps To Havana, and the Doug Little Jazz Quartet. Little founded the Twin Cities Jazz Workshop and has served as its director since its inception in 1996. In addition to his Workshop activities, Little has taught extensively in private lessons, leading master classes, and directing ensembles. For his artistic and educational activities Little has received support from the American Composers Forum, the Jerome Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board, the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, the Minneapolis Arts Commission, the McKnight Foundation, the Bush Foundation, and the French Ministry of Culture.

Viviana Pintado
Vocalist and pianist and Viviana was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. Her father was a professional violinist. Viviana received her schooling at Cubas top music conservatories. In the midst of her college studies at the National Institute of Arts in Havana, Viviana was invited to join the band of salsa super star, Albita Rodriguez. Touring several months a year with Albita, Viviana performed in nearly every country in the western hemisphere as well as throughout Europe and parts of Asia. The group recorded several CDs including three that were nominated for Latin Grammys. Viviana has also recorded with Celia Cruz, Gloria Estesfan, and many other major Latin music artists.

After leaving Cuba in the early 1990s Viviana eventually relocated to Miami, where she was named Best Female Vocalist and Best Pianist by The Miami Herald. In 2002 Viviana left Albitas group which by then was also based in Miami. In 2004 Viviana moved to Minnesota. Arriving in the Twin Cities she quickly established herself a powerful force on the Latin and Latin jazz music scene with her warm vocals and her amazing piano skills.Locally she has performed with many groups including Sabor Tropical, Zafiro, Zafra, Seven Steps To Havana, Charanga Tropical,Salsa del Soul, Salsabrosa, and others.
