Student Advocacy Center Presents: Telling Tales Out of School
The Student Advocacy Center presents: "Telling Tales Out of School," a live storytelling fundraising event. Come and celebrate the art and craft of live storytelling, while supporting the Student Advocacy Center and its work ensuring our most vulnerable students stay in school and realize their rights to a quality public education.
Friday, May 5 at Washtenaw Community College's Towsley Auditorium in the Morris Lawrence Building, 4800 E. Huron River Dr., Ann Arbor. Doors open at 7 p.m. and show is 7:30-9:30 p.m.
Tickets are $25 (or more if you'd like to make a bigger gift to SAC). High school and college students: $10. (At the door, tickets will be $30 for general admission and $10 for students.) If you'd like to grab dinner beforehand at 6 p.m., tickets are $75 ($60 for students).
This a powerful evening where new and experienced storytellers come together to inspire, challenge, and create community.
Our talented storytellers include:
- Derrick Jackson. Since 2008 Derrick has served as the Director of Community Engagement for the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office. As a social worker and Certified LEO he has a unique perspective and role in building bridges between law enforcement and the communities they serve. As a volunteer track coach and community volunteer for numerous local youth serving organizations, Derrick works daily to improve the lives of Washtenaw County youth.
- Patti Smith, a big-hearted and passionate teacher, author, local celebrity and story-teller known for her humor and candor. Patti wrote a young adult book based on the students she taught in Detroit Public Schools. She hopes it gets published so that students in poverty, in foster care, or with disabilities can all find a voice in the characters.
- A performance by Eastern Michigan University's Applied Theater class that will take you inside an expulsion hearing.
- DaQuann Harrison is a graduate of Ypsilanti Community Schools WAVE and a current student at Washtenaw Community College. DaQuann has overcome great odds and homelessness to graduate. DaQuann is the federal liaison for Student Advocacy Center of Michigan, and involved in a variety of community efforts, including the Washtenaw School Justice Partnership, My Brother's Keeper of Michigan-Washtenaw County, University of Michigan Data Lab's Youth Advisory Board (juvenile justice), his church and EMU's Gospel Choir.
- Sada Imran is a graduate of Ann Arbor Public Schools. She is a deaf student who is going into a physician's assistant program. She had to overcome (and still has to overcome) many roadblocks to educational success but does not give up.
Our host is Gordie Wykes, a Student Advocacy Center mentor and advocate known everywhere as the life of the party. He'll bring his trademark energy and passion to guide us through the evening and share a story.

The Student Advocacy Center of Michigan is a unique organization with a proud, 40-year history of helping vulnerable students stay in school or get back into school. There is no other organization like us in Michigan. Our services include youth-driven, family-driven, collaborative education advocacy and support, as well as a statewide Student Rights Helpline, an evidence-based academic mentoring program, an in-home program addressing chronic absenteeism in elementary students, and a leadership after-school program called Youth Action Michigan, which gives students most impacted by school pushout the skills, connections and supports they need to spark systems changes. We are particularly focused on students experiencing foster care, homelessness, mental illness and the negative impacts of harsh school discipline. Many of our referrals come straight from schools and other community partners.
