RASPUTIN
"RASPUTIN" by Douglas Smith has recently been shortlisted for the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for best biography. We are lucky to have him speak for The Galitzine-St Petersburg Trust on 25th May.
A series of lectures marking the year of the Russian Revolution will cover various facets of this world changing event. All tickets will go towards the upkeep of The Prince George Galitzine Memorial Library, which for the last 22 years has been preserving Russian history through books, lectures, exhibitions and other events.
Following the success of his acclaimed book, 'Former People', Douglas Smith has written a new, definitive biography of Rasputin, the man who continues to excite the popular imagination as the personification of evil. The lustful Siberian holy man and peasant still casts its shadow over Russias imperial downfall.
Separating fact from fiction, the author/historian reveals the true life of one of history's most alluring figures. Drawing on a wealth of forgotten documents from archives in seven countries, he demolishes the caricature of the holy devil and tells of the twilight of Imperial Russia, as it lurched towards catastrophe.
The evening is for the benefit of The Galitzine Library and your ticket price includes a glass of wine, as well as this fascinating talk in the world famous Traveller's Club, an exclusive Gentlemen's Club.
