Twelfth Night
MCVTS Theatre presents one of William Shakespeare's classic comedies, Twelfth Night. The show will take place March 23, 24, 25, 30, 31 and April 1st at 7pm at Middlesex County Vocational Technical School auditorium, 112 Rues Lane, East Brunswick, NJ 08816. Pre-sale tickets are $5 for students and $15 for adults. Tickets at the door are $7 for students and $17 for adults. Teachers and administrators, K through college are free. The show will run approximately two hours with intermission. Free parking is available at the venue.
This production of Twelfth Night will be set in 1950s Cuba during the Batista regime, right before the rise of the Castro revolution. MCVTS Theatres Twelfth Night will feature Cuban music performed and arranged by the students, adding a Cuban flair to classical Shakespeare. Outside of the theatre, MCVTS Culinary Arts program will be serving Cuban food and beverages such as flan, empanadas, and coffee. Light design and sound will be done by John Salutz and costumes will be designed by Kasey Gillette.
Twelfth Night takes place on the island of Illyria, where Viola has been shipwrecked after a storm. Separated from her twin brother and assuming he has drowned, Viola decides to enter the service of Duke Orsino while disguised as a young man named Cesario. Duke Orsino is in love with Lady Olivia, who is mourning the death of her brother and refuses to accept any declarations of love or marriage proposals. Orsino sends the disguised Viola to woo Olivia on his behalf, but Olivia falls in love with Cesario. Meanwhile, Viola has fallen in love with Duke Orsino, creating a love triangle between Olivia, Viola, and Orsino.
The main characters will be played by Vaughn Broderick from Monroe, Darian Bencosme and Shamel Flores from Perth Amboy, Lauren Cyrus from South Brunswick, NDigo Jones from Piscataway, Thaddeus Salters from Carteret. Additional characters are being played by Michael Villanueva and Victoria Menendez from Woodbridge, Jillian Silva from South Amboy, Alyson Fernandez and Brianna Bradsher from Perth Amboy, Jorden Whitley from Old Bridge, and Jose Dominguez from Edison.
MCVTS Theatre will be teaming up with new MCVTS Arts Technology program, instructed by Lea Anello. The Arts Technology students will assist in set and costume design, audio and lighting design and engineering, and stage and production management.
MCVTS Theatre is a conservatory-style high school program and part of the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School systems in New Jersey. MCVTS Theatre provides an intensive, laboratory-based foundation for young artists seeking excellence in the field of the arts. The program prepares students for entry into Bachelor of Fine Arts college programs and future employment in the arts. MCVTS Theatre aims to prepare well-rounded, knowledgeable artists for the 21st century, developing in our students habits that will last them a lifetime and serve them in their future professional career and future life in the arts.
