Spring Awakening!

This landmark musical is an electrifying fusion of a German morality tale, coming of age story and rock and roll, that has exhilarated audiences across the nation like no other musical in recent years.

It is set Germany, 1891, a world where the grown-ups hold all the cards. These beautiful young teens do their best to navigate the repressive, paternalistic culture they are stuck in. The story of Spring Awakening dates back to the year 1891, when it premiered as a drama by renowned German playwright Frank Wedekind. Audiences of the time were stunned by the plays confrontational approach to traditional authority and frank presentation of explicit subject matter -- something that led to its censorship and banning of the play numerous times throughout the 1900s. It wasn't until the late 1990s that aspiring playwright and lyricist Steven Sater had the idea of turning the show into a rock opera, aiming to represent the scripts complicated yet universally familiar exploration of teenage development in a manner resonant to modern audiences. Sater and composer Duncan Sheik soon found their ideal match in Michael Mayer, who had previously directed the rock opera Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The new musical was critically lauded upon its Broadway premiere in 2006; it netted eight Tony Awards the following year, including Best Musical and Best Score, and closed in 2009 after a whopping 859 performances, during which time it launched the careers of Glee's Lea Michele and Hamilton's Jonathan Groff.

Spring Awakenings astounding pertinence shines as its characters face the looming angst of their teenage years head-on.  The show follows a group of high school students on the verge of self-discovery. Would-be rebel Melchior Gabor questions the unrelenting stiffness of the authority figures that surround him daily; Moritz Stiefel, his best friend, lies crippled by anxiety over both his failing academic performance and haunting dreams. Meanwhile, young Wendla Bergmann, enraptured by the development of her own body, allows her curiosity to take her down an unfamiliar new path -- one that leads inexorably to Melchior. Confused, frustrated, and yearning for answers, the teens express themselves the best way they know how: through the as-yet-unknown language of anthemic rock music.

*****It is important to note that the show is intended for mature audiences only and covers very intense topics and subject matter.  Please consider this before buying any tickets and/or attending with children.*****
