Outside the Tequila Region: A Tasting of Rare Agave Spirits
On April, 22nd, at 7 PM, S.A.C.R.E.D. (Saving Agave for Culture, Recreation, Education, and Development), Kevin Brown, and Yuan Ji will present a tasting of rare Agave Spirits from Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca, Mexico. We will sample six artisanal Mezcals, all from different artisanal distillers in and around Santa Catarina Minas. The tasting will be accompanied by a slide show, a discussion of the flavors and types of mezcal we are sampling, an introduction to agave, and an overview of the distillation process. There will also be light snacks, including chapuline (grasshopper) tacos, an Oaxacan classic!
Santa Catarina Minas, where the mezcals we are sampling were produced, is a small town about one hour from Oaxaca. It is known for the exceptional quality of its mezcals, most of which are produced in only the most traditional techniques, using clay pot stills and earthen ovens. The rare agave spirits we are sampling are not regularly imported into the United States, and when they are, they typically sell for hundreds of dollars per bottle, so this is an incredible opportunity to discovered some of the world's finest truly artisanal spirits.
The experience, the chapulines, and the agave spirits (Mezcal) are free, but this event is intended to raise funds for S.A.C.R.E.D., so we are asking for an admission of 30 USD per person. All funds raised will go directly to the construction of a local library and a rare agave preservation center in Oaxaca.
We are capping this event at 15 people so that we have the opportunity to discuss and engage with each of you (also, space is limited), so please RSVP and send your admission payment as soon as possible.
