Painting Adoption Weekend (PAW)
ABOUT:

Use art as a tool to build an adoptee community that supports and uplifts.

Painting Adoption Weekend (PAW) is a weekend-long event that brings together youth adoptees between the ages of 6 - 18  from around the Ithaca, NY area to use art as a tool to talk about what being adopted means and to foster a supportive community of adoptees.

As a community-based collaboration between Asian Pacific Americans for Action (APAA), Cornell Partnership Funding Board of Cornell University (CPFB), and Sarah Gotowka (textile artist based in Trumansburg); we are excited to combine youthful energy, local professional expertises, and support from local institutions to make this weekend a great success.

Using methodologies based in creative arts and community building, facilitators and attendees will cultivate a safe environment to explore their own experiences and relationships with adoption. Traditionally mediums such as painting, weaving, dancing, and embroidery have been platforms for intimate discussions and reflective conversations. Through learning and practicing with these mediums attendees can find outlets to fully express themselves throughout the weekend. As attendees and facilitators exchange experiences and reactions, the goal will be to create a sense of communal understanding and support that will live on past the weekend as adoptees continue on their own adoption journey.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

The first day of PAW will be dedicated to activities that help create an intimate and trusting community for both the facilitators and participants of PAW. During the second day of PAW, we will begin to explore notions of what it means to be an adoptee. We have constructed a dynamic curriculum that oscillates and shifts between group vs independent activities (for our introverts and extroverts), slow moving to more physical activities, and light-hearted to more reflective activities.

A few examples of activities we will be doing: 1) Creating a personal talisman out of gauze and plaster. Participants will then be able to embellish and decorate. 2) A giant communal painting, where participants find connections between themselves and the people standing next to them and then illustrate these connections. 3) Embroider a map of where you have been and where you want to be.

Lunch and snacks served both days. We will accommodate gluten free and vegan diets. Please notify us of any allergies!

PARENT INVOLVEMENT INFORMATION:
As the topic of adoption can be challenging to many adoptees, we feel it is critical that the children have a place that they can reflect openly without the presence of their parents. We understand the urge for parents stay and watch their children participate in this event, and that this may be difficult for both parents and children. We welcome and encourage parents to discuss any of their concerns with us via email and/or during drop-off & pick-up each day during PAW.
