64 Squares
This is a story of courage. The project started as a challenge to be brave enough to develop a theatrical piece based on experiences I've had growing up in a broken home. I wanted to explore the effects divorce has had on my life, both positive and negative, and tell a part of my story that no one has heard before.
Thematically, this manifested itself into a chess game, the light and dark squares representing the light and dark moments of life. In my search, I found that even though this story was autobiographical, the topic of lost communication with family was broad enough to connect to all different types of people.
That's when it became paramount to share this as theater. The intent is to share something so close to home that it is universal to the human condition. If I have the spirit to share publicly the most intimate memories of my dark and light squares; hopefully, it will encourage others to look inward and start playing their own cherished games of chess.
