Don Juan, by Moliere
Shockingly frank and controversial, the original production of Don Juan was shut down and withdrawn after its first performance in 1665. Presenting revelatory truths about sex, violence, and blasphemy, the play has been revived as drawing room comedy, farce, morality play, tragedy, and everything in between. The approaches to performing this unrhymed selection are as varied and bold as the title character, but standing immutable is Don Juan: the world's most epic lover, our cultural id, who is incapable of bypassing a single pleasure, and thus attains our attention, disgust, and envy.
Join our cast of nine actors as we explore this incredibly strange and delightful work with a minimalist set at the West End Theatre at St. Pauls and St. Andrews church on 86th Street. Suggesting that last gasp of class distinction in the time between the World Wars, we follow Don Juan through a deliciously fun 90 minute parade of lust, betrayal, philosophy, and the only thing our culture truly respects: getting whatever you want. Valentine's day is past. The era of Don Juan has only just begun.
